Chapter 371: Two Bad Uncles, Are You Looking for Me?

The shopkeeper chuckled, "You've given too much!"

He handed the extra copper coins back to Xia Bao'er. She held the coins in one hand and the bag of candies wrapped in oiled paper in the other.

"Thank you, Uncle! Goodbye~"

She turned around and bounced out of the candy shop. The shopkeeper, seeing that she was only about six or seven years old, couldn't help but worry. He followed her to the door and called out, "Little girl, be careful! Don't hurt yourself!"

The child had a bulging pouch and was out alone. If she encountered any ill-intentioned thieves, it could be dangerous!

Xia Bao'er stopped, turned back, and looked at him. Her round, white face was full of a soft, blooming smile. Although the sun was bright, its rays seemed to gently and evenly bathe her sweet and innocent cheeks. Her rosy face glowed, highlighting her big, sparkling eyes.

"Uncle, you're so kind! Your business will definitely be very busy today, and you'll make a lot of money. Don't worry about me, you should get back to work!"

With that, the little one waved her hand at the shopkeeper and cheerfully hummed a tune as she skipped away.

Today, she had snuck out. Initially, it was just to watch the excitement, but without Yan Hao accompanying her, Xia Bao'er felt even more carefree.

As she passed by various stalls, she bought a small fox mask and placed it on her head. Holding the two bags of candy, she didn't forget to pay for and buy a skewer of glutinous rice dumplings covered in syrup.

The dumplings had just been cooked and were drizzled with a thick, sweet brown sauce. Xia Bao'er ate them, getting her cheeks all sticky. She licked her lips with her small tongue, unaware that when she paid, two men at the stall noticed her.

Xia Bao'er's bulging pouch contained not only broken silver but also whole silver ingots and gold!

The two men, seeing her wealth, exchanged a glance and started following her. After tailing her for a while, they observed that this little girl was out by herself. She was probably some noble family's daughter who had sneaked out to play, with no adults accompanying her—making her an easy target.

Xia Bao'er seemed oblivious, continuing her light and joyful steps, skipping along with her skirt fluttering like a lively, charming cloud.

She passed by a small dog that stared longingly at the sugar-coated dumplings in her hand. Xia Bao'er pouted, "You want some too? But this is my last one."

The little dog sat down pitifully, wagging its tail. Xia Bao'er sighed softly, the scent of milk still on her breath, "Alright, you can have it!"

She crouched down, holding the skewer out for the dog to eat it all up. After playing with the dog for a while, she waved her hand and skipped away, bidding it goodbye.

The two men hiding nearby almost lost their patience waiting. When Xia Bao'er finally entered a quiet and secluded alley, they knew their chance had come and quickly followed her.

But as soon as they entered the alley, they found it empty!

The men were stunned.

"Where did that girl go? Did she run off that quickly?"

As one of them spoke, a soft giggle came from above.

"Are you two bad uncles looking for me?"

They quickly looked up, and one of them was suddenly met with darkness as a sharp pain shot across his face.
