"will you let me get to know you better?"

"so, y/n, any progress finding something that interests you? how was last week?"
"..."
"...y/n?" nakamura called out, noticing her patient's mind was currently somewhere else, as they were anxiously fiddling with the fringe of the wine-red pillow that sat on their lap. once those e/c eyes reconnected with hers, nakamura hummed softly before speaking once more. "what's on your mind, hun?"
"...oh, sorry, i was just spacing out."
"not a problem. would you like to talk about last week? maybe you made some progress you'd like to tell me about."
"...yeah, sure."
nakamura nodded, keeping up that same neutral expression of hers. she was used to being met with short responses, that meant she just had to work with what she could get. after being y/n's therapist for a year now, nakamura understands how difficult it can be to speak, even more so to share. "alright, take your time. start with anything you'd like."
"so, last week... seijoh has a boy's volleyball team, and they're really good. i watched them practice."
nakamura hummed, her pen hovering over the clipboard on her lap. "ah, a sport, huh? thats new. do you think volleyball is something that interests you?"
"...i dont know. it wasn't really the sport itself that interested me. it was the players."
"the players? what about them?"
"...well, i've heard they're really good, and i think they're really good too, but i dont have enough knowledge of the sport to compare them to pro athletes and such. regardless of that, they play with such... passion."
a bit of silence followed as nakamura processed what was spoken to her. this was one of the most detailed responses she had gotten in a while. however, it was easy for nakamura to pick up on the slight distaste leaving y/n's mouth as she mentioned passion. that's how it had always been. "...i'm guessing you felt envious of those players."
y/n chuckled, but it had the same feeling as a sigh of someone who's been tired for so, so long. "i did. i always do, watching people love something so much. watching people give all their effort into something they actually enjoy."
once she finished speaking, she looked down and began fiddling with the pillow fringe again. she felt so many things on that day she visited the gym. intrigue, caused by the looks on the athletes' faces as they played, gratefulness, to oikawa, and admiration of the team's collective fighting spirit. however, she also felt envy, loathing, and loss. it made her feel helpless. regaining that same passion that those boys had seemed like a dream for her.
