-Reagan's POV-
The sun is beginning to dip below the horizon as I finally step out of the café, the familiar bell above the door chiming softly as I leave. The warm, rich scent of coffee and baked goods was stuck to my clothes, a comforting reminder of a long day that I have managed to finish. My feet ache from hours of standing, but luckily, the day is finally over, and I have the next two weeks to myself. Two weeks of freedom, no work, no obligations, just time to relax and recharge. The Cafe was going through some major renovations, making it unsafe for us employees to work, allowing us to have time off and still receive a portion of our pay.
As I make my way home, the cool evening air is a welcome relief against my skin. The streets are quiet, and only a few people are walking about. My thoughts drift as I walk, thinking about nothing in particular, just enjoying the calm that comes with the end of a long day, knowing that I'm going to get a nice long sleep tonight.
When I reach my rented house, a small, slightly run-down two-story building, I notice something unusual on the doorstep. A small, light-coloured shape stands out against the darkening surroundings. Curiosity piqued, I approach cautiously, my heart skipping a beat with a mix of concern and intrigue.
As I get closer, the shape becomes more apparent. A fluffy yellow cat was sprawled out on my doormat. Its fur is a soft, buttery yellow, but the way it's lying there, completely still, sends a shiver down my spine. Is it dead?
Kneeling down, I hesitantly reach out with a hand.
*Poke.*
*Poke.*
*Poke.*
Suddenly, the cat springs to life with a sharp hiss, its eyes snapping open as it swipes at me with surprising speed. I jerk back in surprise, losing my balance and landing hard on the cold, unforgiving steps. Pain shoots through my lower back, but I'm too stunned to care. My eyes are locked on the now very awake and very irritated cat.
The cat stares back at me, its sapphire blue eyes narrowing in displeasure. It looks disoriented, but there's a sharp intelligence in its gaze, a strange, almost human-like awareness. I can't shake the feeling that this is no ordinary cat. The way it was staring at me left a very unsettling feeling deep within.
Taking a deep breath, I slowly stand up, brushing the dirt off my pants. "Hello there, kitty," I said perkily, trying to keep my voice light. The cat's eyes remain fixed on me, the initial panic in them fading but still present, replaced by a guarded wariness. The smile on my face dropped slightly.
"Are you lost?" I ask softly this time, knowing full well that the cat can't answer. But then, to my shock, it slowly nods. My heart skips a beat; could I have imagined that? No, I definitely saw it. This cat is something else.
I crouch down again, careful not to startle it, and reach out to check for a collar or tag. As I get closer, I notice how genuinely stunning the cat's eyes are, a deep, vivid blue that seems to pierce right through me. I can't help but stare, mesmerised until the cat lets out an annoyed, almost impatient meow.
Snapping out of my daze, I realise there's no tag or collar, nothing to indicate that this cat belongs to anyone. 'Poor thing,' I think to myself, feeling a pang of sympathy. Who would leave such a beautiful creature out here all alone?
I let out a small sigh and smiled at the cat, a glimmer of excitement. "Well, it looks like I've got a new friend," I say, my voice filled with warmth. But the cat, uninterested in my enthusiasm, promptly curls back up and pretends to sleep again.
"Okay then," I mutter, rolling my eyes as I carefully step around the feline to unlock my door. "Come on in, kitty," I say, pushing the door open and motioning for it to follow. But the cat doesn't move, remaining stubbornly planted on the doormat.
