*Disclaimer* The Italian spoken in this book was made using Google Translate as I don't know how to speak this language! Enjoy!!!
ELEANOR
I quickly navigated my way through the hustle and bustle of the city most call 'The Big Apple' It was late evening but I knew there was still traffic out by the constant honking cars followed by the sound of squealing breaks and the shouts and cursing of people either driving or walking by.
I hold onto my stick, swiftly moving it from left to right, hoping I don't accidentally bump into anyone as I make my way down the sidewalk.
You'd be surprised how many people found pity in my disability and how many couldn't care less. Though, I didn't care as I started to find my blindness as sort of a superpower.
Having your eyesight taken away is the most devastating and difficult thing to ever experience. However, once you get used to it, you'll start to see that being blind isn't so bad after all. Yeah, you can't see a damn thing but that just means all your other senses will gradually heighten. Though I would still love to see Paris at night, unfortunately, I'm not so lucky.
The fact is, no one considers their other senses until the one they use best is gone. My hearing is excellent and my tastebuds and hands work perfectly as well as my nose so I guess I can't really complain.
Coming out of my thoughts, I feel that my body has now stopped walking, the yelling in a nearby alley catching my attention.
See what I meant? My ears caught it before my mind could, crazy right?
Anyway, I quietly listen in as I reach my left arm out, trying to find a nearby wall to hide by.
"Uccidimi e basta!"
[Just kill me already!]
I heard a guy say in a raspy voice. Though I had no idea what he had said. It seems to be that they're speaking in another language.
Italian maybe.
"Non credo che al capo piacerebbe vederti andare via senza soffrire prima, sporco bastardo."
[I don't think the boss would like to see you go without suffering first, you filthy bastard.]
Another guy had responded before I involuntarily gasped at the sound of a gunshot, followed by a sickening crack and screams from one of the guys.
Which I'm assuming was the one with the raspy voice.
Soon after, I could hear footsteps quickly growing louder in my direction. Hearing the footsteps grow closer, I found my body to be frozen in place. Luckily, my brain then registered what had just happened. I quickly backed up, hoping to run in the other direction, loudly smacking my stick against the wall on accident as I did so.
However, I soon found out that luck wasn't on my side as I felt a hand wrap around my wrist, harshly pulling me back in the same direction I was desperately trying to get away from.
I screamed as loud as I could while I tried my hardest to pull away from the hand that was gripped tightly around my wrist. It was going to bruise later but that was the least of my worries at the moment.
"beh, cosa abbiamo qui?"
[Well, what do we have here?]
The guy had said— well more like asked. But I still couldn't understand a word he said since the only language I knew was the one I had grown up around and that was none other than; English.
"Let me go!" I yelled, still not giving up. Well, at least not until I heard footsteps come from behind me and soon after, I could feel something pierce through the skin on my neck. I stopped moving, realizing that I was starting to feel a bit woozy.
Which could only mean one thing...
