Saanj woke up in the middle of the night, feeling uneasy. She sat up, holding her chest, heartbeat threatening to leap out of it.

She tried to breathe in and out to calm herself down, but the restlessness was not leaving her.

Why does it feel like something is going to change? She thought. The goosebumps on her flesh, the chills running down her spine, everything felt out of place.

She closed her eyes, a memory hitting her hard.

"Shit. Not again." she breathed out on a whisper.

*flashback*

The feeling of hearing a new voice, although she was wary, made her feel hopeful. It was tiny, but in that moment, she didn't have a choice to latch on it. Her only mean of survival.

The male standing in the doorway had a hold on her that she couldn't explain.

"Sa.a..n..j" she choked out, falling to the floor.

Before she could feel the hardness underneath, warmth engulfed her.

Her eyes popped open, although she barely had any strength left. Every fiber in her body was screaming.

He gently tapped on her cheeks, jolting her awake. She was in and out of consciousness, unable to fully succumb to darkness again.

"Hey, hey" he whispered, as if he didn't want anyone to catch him here.

When a drop of water touched her parched mouth, she greedily drank, almost choking on it.

"Careful" he said softly, while tilting her head forward.

He sat her down, holding her.

Salil didn't know what got into him, but he couldn't stop himself from helping this frail girl.

He knew what his dad was up to, he knew why he was here, but just for a moment, he forgot.

Her soft eyes sought his constantly. He felt his heart beating rhythmically, wondering what was wrong with him.

"She's beautiful you idiot" his subconscious chided.

He suddenly let go, as if her skin scalded him.

She sagged to the ground, not expecting the sudden loss.

She whimpered, making him regret his action immediately.

"Sorry" he said, looking her straight in the eyes once again.
"I shouldn't be here" he said, although he didn't move an inch. He couldn't.

"Why?" She asked, her voice surprisingly firm.

His gaze seared hers, not expecting the response. "I.." He started, but decided against it because he knew he couldn't tell her who he really was.

"I have to go" he suddenly said getting up, leaving her there. He was visibly shaken, but didn't turn around once.

It took everything in Salil to not glance behind him, but he knew better. He couldn't go soft now.
