-they have the potential to become a great swordsman. I ask you to take them in and teach them fire breathing. I request you send me back a reply if you would be willing to help them reach their full potential as a swordsman.

Best regards,

Urokodaki Sakonji

Rengoku refolded the letter and set it on the short table before him. "A TSUGOKU!" An excited aura surrounded his now invigorated figure at the thought of finally having his very own tsugoku.

He quickly grabbed his own quill and ink and began drafting his response. Upon finishing, he folded the letter and sealed it before handing it to his communication crow.

It soared into the sky, soon joining a murder of crows as they flew above Mount Fujikasane, their caws sounding like mocking to the young student training below. They continued to build their strength in hopes of a change in their breathing training, but alas, to no avail.

Eventually, Urokodaki called for them to wrap up their over-the-top training. Y/n hurled their bokken to the floor, again frustrated, and stormed back to the house. Y/n yanked the sliding door open and as they slammed it closed, a crow flew past them, leaving a tear in the door behind them. Y/n turned around and saw Urokodaki sitting with an envelope in hand, reading the sender's information.

After scanning over it, Urokodaki tore the corner and opened the rest of it with his thumb. He pulled the letter out of its protective envelope and read the contents. Urokodaki would nod every once in a while as his eyes scanned the paper.

He gently put the letter on the floor next to him, then called for Y/n, asking them to sit across from him. Y/n pads in front of their teacher and sits seiza preparing for his next words.

"In two days' time, you will be leaving by train to meet with a hashira. He's an excellent teacher and he might be able to advance your training as I have no more knowledge left to give. I've taught you all I can and can no longer help you flourish."

Y/n sat still, slowly blinking, attempting to comprehend what felt like rejection and failure. Y/n's head hung in a slightly relaxed position. Their gaze transfixed onto the floor beneath them. They didn't move, just sat. Their head tilted, small tears pooling in their waterline.

A few of them escaped due to their head's position even as they tried to blink them away. Their thoughts were going a million miles an hour, overlapping one another, bubbling up like water in a pot under pressure; until they were all abruptly stopped by the sound of their name being called.

"-n...Y/N! Are you okay?" they blinked up at their teacher.

"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" Y/n's eyes darted around the room, looking anywhere but at her mentor. Blinking rapidly as they attempted to keep the tears at bay.

"Well, you were spacing out for a bit." Their eyes took on that absentminded stare as they shakily reassured Urokodaki one last time before heading off to their room with the excuse of 'packing' for their trip.

After putting their non-essential belongings in a bag, they laid on their futon. They laid there, staring at the ceiling while their mind raced at a million thoughts per second once again. Their self-doubt only increased due to this send-off. The ever-looming thoughts about their self-worth, or lack thereof in their opinion, clawed at Y/n's omnipresent wall of emotions.

It slowly chipped at the cracks, skillfully wearing themselves down. Y/n turned over so their back was to the door and finally let a few tears slip through. And with the inevitable surprising tiredness that comes after crying, Y/n let go and fell into a fitful slumber.

The birds outside chirped happily, blissfully unaware of the turmoil in Urokodaki's small home. Y/n sat up slowly, rubbing their slightly puffy eyes to rid of any sleep stuck in their corners. They run their hands over their face, dragging the skin of their cheeks and then through their hair, letting out a heavy sigh.

Y/n shuffles through their clothes and chooses a simple outfit that's still breathable and suitable for their conditioning. Y/n had the thought that maybe water-breathing was just not cut out for them, yet they trained anyway. They just hoped that maybe something would change.

They hoped for a miracle and that they wouldn't have to leave Urokodaki so soon. Y/n wouldn't even be able to bid a final goodbye to Tanjiro after his Final Selection; all they could hope for was that he would get back to Urokodaki's house safely while they resided with this other teacher, the hashira.

Y/n passed through the front rooms quickly and headed out and up the mountain. Y/n tested everything they knew they could do. They meditated whilst doing total concentration breathing, they worked to increase their stamina, they worked to build their strength, and they worked to be better than they were.

Y/n even tried something she saw Urokodaki doing throughout her stay with him, total concentration breathing constantly. She tried to maintain total concentration breathing while going through their self-made conditioning.

They didn't get far before their lungs started to ache and they were out of breath. By the time they called it quits, the sun had risen to shine directly down on Y/n's clearing. So, with sweat rolling off, and the relentless sun beaming on them Y/n headed inside.
