Unsettled Emotions

The drive back to the Gupta mansion was quiet, the only sounds being the gentle hum of the car engine and the occasional rustling of the wind outside. Inside the car, Khushi stared out of the window, lost in her thoughts. The evening had been eventful in ways she hadn’t anticipated, and she couldn’t help but replay her brief interactions with Arnav Singh Raizada over and over in her mind.

He was unlike anyone she had ever met—intense, cold, and difficult to read. Yet, there was something about him that intrigued her, something that made her want to understand him better. His unexpected questions about her business had caught her off guard, but she was grateful for the challenge. It wasn’t often that someone pushed her to think deeper about her goals, and despite his harsh demeanor, she found herself respecting his perspective.

As they approached their home, Shashi, who had been quietly observing his daughter, broke the silence. "Khushi, what did you think of the Raizadas?"

Khushi turned her gaze from the window and offered her father a small smile. "They’re a very respectable family, Bauji. Nani and Anjaliji were both very warm and welcoming. And Payal seems very happy with Akashji."

Shashi nodded, his expression thoughtful. "Yes, the Raizadas are well-respected in society. And I’ve known Devyaniji for many years—she’s a wise woman. It’s important for us to maintain good relations with families like theirs."

Khushi understood what her father was implying. There was more to this dinner than just a social visit. The underlying purpose was clear—both families were assessing the potential of a deeper alliance, possibly even a marriage between her and Arnav. The thought made her stomach flutter with anxiety, though she didn’t let it show.

Garima, sensing Khushi’s unease, reached over and gently patted her hand. "Khushi, whatever happens, you should know that your father and I will always support you. We want you to be happy, and we trust you to make the right decisions for your future."

Khushi smiled at her mother’s comforting words, though her mind was still racing. "Thank you, Amma. I know you always have my best interests at heart."

As they pulled into the driveway of their mansion, Khushi took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind of the evening’s events. She knew she needed to focus on the present, on the upcoming wedding preparations for Payal and Akash, but it was difficult to shake the thoughts of Arnav that had taken root in her mind.

Once inside the house, Khushi excused herself and headed straight to her room. She needed some time alone to process everything that had happened. The lavish decor of her bedroom, usually a source of comfort, felt stifling tonight. She sat down on the edge of her bed, her fingers absentmindedly playing with the edge of her dupatta as she tried to make sense of her emotions.

Arnav Singh Raizada was a man who evoked strong feelings in those around him—fear, respect, admiration, and even a touch of envy. Khushi had seen it in the eyes of his family members, in the way they spoke about him. But what had struck her most was the sadness she sensed beneath his cold exterior. There was something about him that seemed… wounded, as if he were carrying a burden too heavy for one person to bear.

Khushi sighed, lying back on the bed and staring up at the ceiling. She knew it was foolish to let her thoughts linger on Arnav. He was a man of immense power and influence, someone who could easily crush those who crossed his path. But there was something about him that she couldn’t ignore, something that pulled at her heartstrings despite her better judgment.

As she lay there, her mind drifting, a soft knock at the door brought her back to reality. She sat up, smoothing her hair before calling out, "Come in."

The door opened to reveal Payal, her face glowing with happiness. She walked over to Khushi and sat down beside her on the bed, her eyes filled with excitement. "Khushi, I can’t believe how well tonight went! The Raizadas are such wonderful people, and Akashji… he’s just perfect."
