Christy Miller stepped into the doorway of her parents home. It smelled like fresh baked cookies. Her mom liked to bake whenever Christy and Todd came over because it has become a rare treat to be able to sit down with them. She and Todd stepped into the living room to find David sitting on the floor entranced in his video games.
"Hey David." He barely glanced up at his big sister as she greeted him. "Wow 18 and still playing video games."
"Oh Christy always the charmer." Her dad smiled as he hugged her and then hugged Todd as well. "How have you two been? We feel like it's been ages since we've seen you."
"It's been good dad, we talk on the phone all the time."
"Oh I know but can't I just be able to see my beautiful daughter once in a while?"
"I guess you can." Christy smiled as she followed her dad into the kitchen while Todd picked up a controller and sat beside David.
"Christy! Oh I'm so glad to see you! How have you been?" Her mom was excited as usual. She loved the conversations she always had with her mom. Most of them were on the phone now days but she still cherished the few face to face moments.
"Hey mom. Mm what smells so good?"
"Lasagna. I made it special and I also have strawberry shortcake and cookies for dessert."
Dinner was the usual when they are at her parents house. They discussed their jobs and how work was going and talked about how their lives have been. Tonight they even talked about Katie, Christie best friend, who was getting married next month.
"Christy, how are things going with Katie's wedding plans?" Her moms face was illuminated by the kitchen lights.
"They are good. We are going to stay for about a week. We will be in Africa on the Sunday before the wedding and we will leave Saturday when Katie and Eli leave for their honeymoon."
"Oh that sounds exciting. Where are they going to go? Do they know?"
"Yeah. They are going to some place that Eli found on a missions thing he went to. She said it looked really nice. She also liked it because there was something to do with hot air balloons. I'm not sure but it may just be typical Katie."
"Well typical Katie is our favorite Katie."
After dinner they cleaned up and the boys went into the living room for more video games while Christy and her mom went into her room.
The two girls currently sat on her moms bed.
"Mom, I have something to tell you."
"Yes honey?"
"I think I might be pregnant." It took everything within her to tell her mom. She hadn't told Todd yet. She wanted to wait and be sure first. Her mom looked at her with wide eyes.
"Christy are you serious?"
"Well I mean yes. I haven't taken the test yet but I think I might be."
"Christy that is amazing! Have you told Todd yet?"
"No. I want to be sure before I tell him."
"Well that's great. You better call me the moment you find out okay?"
"I will. I have a test at home I'm going to take when we get home. If it says yes then I will probably tell Todd tomorrow."
"Well that's good."Christy stood in front of the mirror in her bathroom and looked at the reflection. She decided that whatever the test said she would be okay. Even if the answer wasn't positive. The light made her nutmeg hair shine and she looked at it carefully as she waited for the test. She wondered if her kids would have hair like hers or blonde hair like Todd's. If it is a girl she would probably have Christy's hair. She dreamed of having a girl so she could braid her hair and enjoy all of the girly things with her. A boy would be nice too but it wouldn't be the same. Christy got lost in her thoughts and almost didn't hear the timer go off. She prepared herself to look at the test. This was the perfect time because Todd was out with a kid from the youth group and would likely be gone a couple of hours. If it was positive she would have time to plan the perfect way to tell him. If it wasn't she would have time to regain herself before telling him that she had decided to be sure. Christy looked down at the test. All of a sudden her stomach dropped. She looked down at the little negative sign and began to wipe away her tears as she stood over the counter hoping that the sign would change. She grabbed the test and threw it in the trash. She covered it up with paper to hide it. She walked into her bed room and sat down on her bed. She wanted nothing more than to tell Todd when he got home that she was pregnant. She had wanted so long to be a mother and just when she thought she was sure about it, she was wrong. She laid back on the head board as she heard the door open. She shot up but then decided that it wasn't worth it. Todd walked into the room and saw the tears on Christy's face.
"Christy! What's wrong? Are you okay?"
She looked up at him as he leaned over her with a worried face. He sat down beside her and wrapped her in a hug as she began to sob quietly. She took a deep breath.
"I'm not pregnant."
Todd looked at her worriedly. She hadn't told him that she thought she was. She explained to him that she was late and told him that she was sure she was. He pulled her tighter as she quieted down. She looked up at him as he pulled away and smiled.
"Will you pray with me?"
Todd smiled, "of course."
They held hands as Todd began to pray and in seconds Christy felt nothing but peace. Todd prayed for the kids they might have someday and asked God for the blessing even if it wasn't that day. As they finished praying Christy felt God speaking to her "All is well my child. I will take care of you."
When they finished praying they both looked up at the exact same moment and ended their prayer with the same words flowing off their lips at the exact same time, "As you wish."
