i keep thinking that if i'd just
gone to your house for our date that
day, maybe things would be different.
maybe i could've saved you.— R.
he sat at a small table in the corner of the café, his fingers drumming anxiously against the wooden surface. he checked his phone for what felt like the hundredth time, hoping to see a message or call from her.the minutes stretched into hours, the once bustling café now quieting down as the evening wore on.
he glanced at the clock on the wall — she was never this late. a knot of worry began to form in his chest, tightening with every second that passed without word from her.
he tried calling again, the phone ringing endlessly before going to voicemail. he left another message, his voice strained as he asked her to call him back.
as the sun dipped lower in the sky, his initial worry quickly turned into a suffocating sense of dread. his heart pounded in his chest, every beat echoing the growing fear that something was terribly wrong.
he tried to rationalize it—maybe she'd just lost track of time, or her phone had died. but deep down, he knew those were just excuses to keep himself from panicking.
as the minutes ticked by, Rin's anxiety escalated. he couldn't sit still, his leg bouncing under the table as he repeatedly checked his phone, hoping for a notification that never came. he sent her another message, his hands shaking slightly as he typed out the words.
when his attempts to reach her parents also failed, a cold wave of fear washed over him. he frowned, the tension in his chest growing unbearable.
what if something had happened? what if she was hurt, or worse?
he felt utterly powerless, his mind racing with scenarios he couldn't control. he was stuck in that café, surrounded by the normalcy of other people's lives while his own was unraveling in slow motion.
the uncertainty was like a vice around his heart, squeezing tighter with every passing second.
his eyes kept drifting to the door, hoping she would walk in any moment with an apologetic smile, but the door remained closed. he swallowed hard, his throat tight as he struggled to keep the panic at bay.
he had never felt so helpless, the world around him fading into a blur as all he could think about was her.
little did he know, while he sat there in growing desperation, she was in a hospital bed, fighting a battle he couldn't even begin to imagine.
and that realization would haunt him, knowing he had been so close, yet so far from being able to help her when she needed it most.
