chris and i went to the houses that burned down later that day, just looking around. everything was charred and turned to ashes; there was nothing left, not even an outline of the house. i walked around, feeling like something was off, but i didn't know what. chris went to the other houses while i stayed at the one where the fire started.

i walked over burnt wood and leftover furniture that looked more like charcoal now. i saw something waving around in the wind; it was under one of the logs. i walked over and carefully picked it up. i could barely make out the word written on it, but i managed to get one of the words: 'tripwire.'

'chris?' i called to the other houses he was looking at.

'coming!' he said, running over.

i waved the paper in the air. 'look what i found.'

he took the paper from my hands. 'weird... look, i think we should go now. matt's making dinner. you can come over and eat if you want.'

'yeah, thanks.'

we walked back to my car and headed out to his house. i wanted to learn more about this fire; something didn't feel right.

~time skip~

'hey guys!' matt said as we entered the house. the smell of tacos filled the air. 'you hungry? got some tacos.'

chris and i got our food and sat down on the outside patio. i took out my phone and looked up the news again, checking out the house fire photos they got. as i looked closer, i saw something that caught my eye. a figure was behind one of the trees, looking out. my heart felt like it was going to stop. this couldn't be a coincidence. and i had an even worse feeling—it didn't seem like this fire was an accident.
