It was a Friday night, and for the first time in a while, I found myself with no plans. Normally, my calendar was packed, especially during a week like this—spring break. I was supposed to be in Miami with my friends, but the recent end of my situationship had derailed those plans. So, instead of sticking around college, I decided to come back home to spend the week with my parents. But to my surprise, they had their own vacation planned, leaving me and my older sister Zoe alone in the house.
The real twist, though, was that Zoe had invited her entire friend group from college over to our place. Among them was Renee, Zoe's best friend for as long as I could remember. Back in high school, I had always had a crush on Renee but was too shy and invisible to make a move or even get her to notice me. I was just Zoe's cute, dorky little sister. Renee was the school's it girl, the hot girl everyone wanted but couldn't have. Those days of being the shy, awkward little sister were long behind me, though.
"Hey, dork face, are you going out or what?" Zoe called from the stairs, her voice breaking my peace as I lay on the couch.
I sat up, pretending to be shocked. "Excuse me! Whatever happened to 'Hello,' 'How are you,' and 'My name is?'" I asked, feigning offense.
"Billie, I'm serious. Are you going out or not?" Zoe said, hands on her hips, clearly annoyed.
"I don't know yet. Damn, why are you so bossy?" I muttered, scrolling through my phone again.
"Well, I was wondering if you could give me your room—or rather, let me borrow it," Zoe said, causing me to look up in confusion.
"Excuse me, what?" I asked, sitting up to face her properly.
"Yes, Billie, you heard me. Can I have your room for tonight?" she repeated, rolling her eyes.
"Yes, I know what you're saying, I understand English, but why would you want my room? You have your own room, and there's a guest room," I replied, my annoyance creeping in.
