The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the field. I scanned the field, spotting our twins among the huddle of their teammates, already immersed in their warm-ups. I couldn't help but smile, feeling that familiar swell of pride. They were getting so good. I sat down on the bleachers, holding the spot I knew Billie would want.

With a smirk, I pulled out my phone, seeing the "I'm running late" text already lighting up my screen. Of course, Billie was running late—typical.

Me: Guess who already has the best seats?

A moment later, my phone buzzed in my hand.

Billie: Oh, c'mon. I'll be there in five...

I chuckled to myself, typing back a reply.

Me: You know they're gonna start without you, right?

Billie: Damn, hold the game for me. I'm about to make my grand entrance.

I shook my head, grinning. Billie was always running late, but somehow, she always made it worth the wait.

I spotted him approaching from the corner of my eye—Jake, or whatever his name was—walking straight towards me with that same annoying smirk. The one I had to deal with every other time he decided to "accidentally" run into me at these events.

"Hey, Renee," he said, sliding into the spot next to me on the bleachers. "So, you here alone again?"

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, keeping my expression neutral as I glanced over. "Nope," I said, keeping it casual. "Just waiting for my wife to show up."

It was the same line I'd used before, yet, just like the last few times, it never seemed to sink in.

He laughed, leaning in a little closer. "You still sticking to that story, huh? I mean, come on, a woman like you, married? And to a girl? Really?"
