ICARIS? More like Icarus.

It's a fissure.

The whole world is a mess, thanks to humans... And they care about a single fissure? Really?

Tom was a relatively skinny child. Not skinny like a fish spine, just generally skinny when compared to most kids his age. He was about 14, and had just moved to the "ICARIS scientific research installment".

ICARIS is a tech place, made to be a temporary home away from home to researchers that were researching about a fissure. And he got dragged onto it since her mother couldn't leave him with anyone else.

Tom had gotten used to the people around, there weren't many kids, but most were his age, at least. Not that he befriended most of them, Jun, a girl that loved mythology and astrology, was his classmate for a long time, probably since 2nd grade, so they were pretty used to each other.

There was also Alex, she never got around, mostly stayed inside her dome - the house shape that stood the constant earthquakes around the fissure - and on her tablet and computer, D'angelo, the chief's son, he seemed nice, but Tom had to admit he was a bit intimidated by him. And then there's Eugene, Jun's brother. He's just a headache in person. Jun always descibed him as the spoiled one. That didn't matter much for Tom, since Eugene was almost always nowhere to be seen, probably in his room.

Tom got bored frequently there. He was tired of hearing about that freaking fissure! What does it even have to be so special like this?

Sure, it appeared, but isn't that how fissures work?

ICARIS drones have been destroyed down dere recently for unknown reasons. All their cameras record is a static and then they shut down thanks to damage. But that didn't convince Tom that the fissure wasn't normal.

One day, he decided to go look at it, take a closer look, from inside it.

He'd forgotten about the earthquake factor, but that didn't stop him from going rock by rock down the fissure. Of course he wasnt dumb to go too deep, just enough to satisfy his thirst for something interesting.

Tom walked carefully along the fissure, but soon a chill was sent through his spine as he saw something move. He slowly walked closer against his own will, moved by curiosity.

But soon, all Tom could see was darkness. He'd closed his eyes instinctively as something lashed at him too fast to even process.

It was some animal heavy enough to pin him to the rocks of the fissure. With claws... And scales...?

Tom opened his eyes that were met by a growling black winged creature, it's head looked like an axolotl in a way, with a white marking in the muzzle, paws and the belly. It's blue eyes pierced like razors.

Tom was too terrified to do anything.

The creature started to charge some sort of purple lightning in it's mouth and all Tom could do was look away and pray that it wouldn't hurt much.

Except it didn't.

The creature flinched with a wince, backing away and running to a cave nearby.

Tom was confused, but as he got up, he could see a bit of red in the dark rocks that formed the pillar-floor beneath them.

Was it... Hurt?

Or better,

What is it?

A dragon. A breathing, living dragon. He concluded as he saw the figure in the cave, lit up slightly by the magma on the floor of the fissure.

He was sure he wasnt dreaming.  It was an actual dragon. Right in front of his eyes, in front of him. A dragon!

"Wow..." He let out quietly, amazed by the dragon... Who just tried to kill him, literally seconds ago.

It growled, arching his back.

"Woah, it's okay- im not.. not gonna hurt you" Tom stepped back. "Not like i can" He chuckled quietly and nervously.

It changed nothing. But the dragon was backed up to the wall of the cave. But that also led Tom to notice.

The red was blood. Blood from him. His tail was hurt.

It seemed to be just a big scratch, nothing serious.

"You're... Hurt..?"

It roared as a warning.

"Hey! Hey! It's okay!" Tom tried to calm it down. Maybe it was just scared. "I... I can help!"

He had treated a few cuts, that cant be that difficult. So, he took a spare shirt out of his backpack, showing it to the dragon.

The dragon hesitated, walking closer slowly, sniffing the cloth piece.

"See...?" He realized that he was about half the height of the dragon, maybe 2,5/4? Maybe.

The dragon sat down, signing to his tail with his head. A skeptical look in his eyes.

Tom nodded in understanding, a small and friendly smile on his face. He kneeled next to the dragon's tail, carefully wrapping the shirt around the wound. He backed away as soon as he was done.

"There you go." He said carefully, looking at the provisory bandaging he did.

It grunted analyzing it. He soon looked at Tom with a grateful happy little roar-purr.

"Oh? You're welcome Mr. Dragon" Tom chuckled lightly, surprised by the dragon's way of showing emotions almost human.

It was almost as the dragon chuckled with him. It was cute, honestly.

The dragon then had an idea.

It took off, grabbing Tom with his front paws.

Tom was caught off guard, yelping a bit but soon just being amazed again.

The sight his eyes were met with.

A cave, filled with crystals... And more dragons! A whole bunch of them!

"Wow..." He said as he looked around. "This has just... Been here...? This is amazing!"

The dragon took a few flights around before heading back out, landing with Tom back in the surface, but outside the fissure.

It nudged Tom's chest and flew off, disappearing in the fissure.

Wow...

Tom just stood there in legit disbelief.

This was just pure crazy.. No one would believe him! Unless...

Maybe he shouldn't. They are probably hidden for a reason. It was better to leave them be.

For now.
