Colby's eyes snapped open, the fluorescent lights of the hospital room burning into his retinas like tiny white suns. He had dozed off in the chair beside Sam's hospital bed, his body curled into an uncomfortable pretzel. Sam lay still, the steady beep of the heart monitor the only sound that filled the sterile air. Colby stretched, his muscles protesting with the ache of exhaustion. He looked down at his phone. Five missed calls and a dozen messages from friends, all asking for updates on Sam's condition.A wave of dread washed over him as he remembered the events of the night before. The haunted hospital, the horrific creatures, and the desperate escape that had left Sam in this precarious state. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had to go back. It was as if the very air in the room was whispering a silent plea for his return. He knew the risk was immense, but he couldn't sit idly by while his best friend hovered between life and death. With trembling hands, Colby typed out a group text to his closest friends: "Guys, I need to go back to the hospital. Alone. I've got a hunch there's something there that can save Sam. If anything happens, tell my folks I love them." He hit send, not allowing himself to linger on the gravity of his words. He knew they would be worried, but he had to do this. For Sam.The messages began to flood in, a cacophony of "What?!" and "Are you crazy?!" But amidst the barrage of concern, there were words of support, too. They knew Colby was driven by love and desperation. They offered to come with him, to face the horrors together, but Colby declined. This was something he had to do alone. With a heavy heart, he leaned in to kiss Sam's forehead, whispering, "I'll be back. I promise." The cold, clammy skin sent a shiver down his spine, but he forced a smile and hoped it would somehow reach Sam's subconscious. He grabbed his coat from the chair, the fabric brushing against his cheek as he stood, and for a brief moment, the warmth of the fabric felt like Sam's arm around him, reassuring him that everything would be okay.Colby took a deep breath, the antiseptic scent of the hospital stinging his nostrils, and made his way to the door. The hallway outside was a stark contrast to the chaos of the night before. The calmness of the day washed over him, but it was a façade. The echo of his sneakers on the linoleum floor was the only sound, a rhythmic reminder of the urgency pulsing through his veins. He checked the time; it was early afternoon, and the sun painted the world outside in a golden glow, a stark juxtaposition to the shadows that haunted the hospital's halls. The decision to return to the haunted hospital alone weighed heavily on him, but he knew he had no choice. Sam's life was on the line, and the thought of losing his best friend was unbearable. The texts from his friends had brought a glimmer of hope to his heart, but he had to be the one to face whatever lay in wait. He stepped into the elevator, the doors closing with a finality that sent his stomach plummeting. The descent felt like an eternity, the seconds stretching out as he steeled himself for what was to come.
