PRESENT DAY
"I'm intrigued though," Sam jests, switching up the mood almost instantly. "What exactly is it you think we've been getting up to all this time?"
He smirks at me, quirking an eyebrow in amused curiosity. I could just be imagining it but I'm pretty sure he's insinuating that I'm thinking something dirty, or scandalous at the least, which to be fair to him, wasn't far from the truth. I had always pictured them going off to do something reckless, to fuck shit up, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. After all, that's what they did to me, wasn't it?
The Cady of a few weeks- even days ago- would say 'I'm not sure' or 'nothing really'. She'd try and divert their attention away from her at all costs. But now...now I don't want to push them away anymore. I want to be who I was when I felt free with them.
"Oh, you know..." I start, casting my gaze across them all and trying to hide the smile tugging at my lips. "Just general mischief...mayhem... havoc, chaos, devilment, shenanigans, tomfool-"
I barely get the first few words out before Sam laughs and lunges for me, trying to slap his hand over my mouth when he realises I wasn't planning on stopping at one answer. I dodge him at first but he wraps his arms around me and holds me against him as he covers my mouth to smother my words.
"Ok, ok! Shut the fuck up." He laughs, giving me a little shove when I let my tongue dart out to swipe across his fingers. "We get the point."
The two of us stand locked in a staring contest, our smirks near identical but with mirth eating away at us as we try to keep straight faces.
"Oh, so that's how poorly you think of us, huh?" He pretends to be offended but I know he isn't. He can't be, not when his eyes are sparkling in a way I haven't seen in years.
"I wonder what ever gave her that idea?" Someone says in such a pan, monotone sarcastic way that I'm convinced it had to have been Samson, even though I'm staring straight at him and didn't see his mouth move. No, it was Reece. Reece who, up until now, had been mostly silent, still coming across as a shell of his normal self. But if he's joining in now, then maybe he's finally losing the dark aura that's been radiating from him since he cornered me into that alleyway before. Maybe, just maybe, he can finally be himself again now that the five of us are here together. And this time, I'm not going anywhere. I'm not leaving him again. He's fucking stuck with me whether he wants me or not.
"Yeah, us causing trouble? Never!" Sam teases, his voice is quiet though, like he's alluding to a secret. Our secret. The trouble we caused when we stepped foot in the forest at midnight on halloween.
With a final conspiratory smile, Sam brushes off that whole interaction and throws his arm around my shoulders, pulling me over to sit between him and Max on the stack of timber. Reece's eyes never leave me, burning into my side. When I challenge him by staring back, I knew he wouldn't give in. He's not the type. If you push him, he'll push back until you're the one who ends up broken. You can't win when you play his games.
