—————I wake up to the horrendous sound that is my phone's radar alarm. I had finally gotten used to the timezone difference in Australia and now I had to wake up at 5am almost every day for work again. Don't get me wrong, I felt incredibly lucky to find a job so quickly and also get to work in a new and unique environment, I just wished I could've run into a movie director that was anti-early call times. For someone who was not a morning person, deciding on a career that usually meant getting up early was not my finest thought process. But there was no time to daydream about sleeping in, because this was my first day and I wanted to make a good first impression.
I wasn't exactly sure if there was a specific dress code for medics on movie sets, so I just put on some scrubs with a Metalstorm jacket that Jody had given me since I was joining the staff. I put my hair up in a big claw clip and put on some minimal makeup to look a little nicer. I slid on a pair of tennis shoes and grabbed my medical bag, my lunch, and my personal bag. Finally, I poured some tea in a to-go cup for the ride to set. Walking out my apartment, I called an uber. I hadn't bought a car yet, as I had realized that I would probably need to relearn how to drive since I now lived in a different country. After reaching the apartment complex's parking lot and waiting for a couple minutes, my driver pulled up and I carefully set my bags inside and climbed in.

—————"Melissa! Lovely to see you," Jody greeted me as I walked onto set. I smiled and waved back as best I could with my arms full carrying my medical bag. Jody's kindness was something I was really grateful for. I was pretty anxious about my first day, and while the greeting wasn't much, it made me feel a little more relaxed and like I did indeed belong here. As I made my way to the medical tent to set up, I passed by a man in conversation, who shortly upon seeing me left his conversation and jogged after me.
"Hi!" he said, slightly out of breath from catching up to me.
"Hi..?" I said, tilting my head in confusion.
"Oh, sorry! My name's Dan Tucker, I'm the head stunt coordinator," he introduced himself.
"Nice to meet you, Dan. I'm Melissa Groves."
"Nice to meet you as well. Jody told me about you, and I figured since I work closely with stunts I should probably get to know our medic," he chuckled a little.
"That would make sense," I grinned.
"Would you like some help?" he asked, referencing all the stuff I was carrying.
"Yeah actually, if you don't mind."
"Not at all."
Dan grabbed my medical bag as we proceeded to my tent. As we walked, Dan pointed to people and introduced them to me, although there was definitely no way I was going to remember all these names. As we were almost at the tent, Dan pointed at a man in a metallic outfit talked to another man who was dressed rather casually.
"He probably doesn't need an introduction, but that is Tom Ryder, the lead character in Metalstorm. And the man he is talking to is his stunt double." As Dan introduced them, the stunt double turned around, waving and walking over to where we were, the other guy following behind.
"Hi!" the man said, "I'm Henry, Tom's stunt double," gesturing over to Tom. He stuck out a hand, which I grabbed to shake.
"Tom Ryder," the other man introduced himself, but he did not offer a handshake.
"Nice to meet the both of you, I'm Melissa, the new medic," I introduced myself, smiling.
"Nice to meet you too," Henry smiled back, "I hope I don't see you a lot but I probably will," he chuckled, joking about the fact he would only be seeing me because of injuries from stunts. Tom only nodded at me and then turned around waving Henry towards him to continue whatever they were doing.
"Sorry about him, Tom's a well-known douche," Dan said, "don't take anything he says or does to heart."
"Yeah I kind of got that vibe."

—————Once Dan and I reached the tent, he stayed to help me set up despite me trying to waver him away as I was sure he had other things to attend to. I looked forward to getting to work with him and once again felt lucky to be surrounded by kind people at my new job. As I was adding a sign on the front of my tent, Dan got an alert from his phone excused himself for a moment. He came back a few minutes later with Jody at his side who was holding something behind her back.
"Hi Jody!" I grinned.
"Hi Melissa! I have one last gift I wanted to give you." She brought her hands forward holding a cute little sunhat. "It's a set thing," she smiled.
"I love it!" I squealed, happily taking it from her and putting it on immediately. After a brief chat with Jody about how I was settling in, the two said their goodbyes and went their separate ways to get back to work. Before going back in my tent, I looked around admiring set, and accidentally made eye contact with Tom Ryder before quickly looked away and retreating into my tent. I thought back to our introduction and how dismissive and cocky he was. How did I ever have a crush on him?
