THE NEXT FEW DAYS ARE NOT SUNNY, and lola is sure this brings tantalus joy. while tyson is happier than a man who's just won the lottery because his friend is his half-brother, percy can't help but feel embarrassed. ashamed.
the other campers keep making mean comments about him. percy is no longer percy jackson, the cool guy who'd retrieved zeus's lightning bolt last summer. he's now percy jackson, the kid with a monster for a brother.
"he's not my real brother!" percy protests whenever tyson isn't around. "he's more like a half-brother on the monstrous side of the family. like... a half-brother twice removed, or something."
nobody buys it and he's a little angry with his father. being poseidon's son became some sort of joke.
lola wants to make him feel better but it's not like her words can shield him from everyone else's. so annabeth suggests they team up for the chariot race to distract themselves. they can't stand tantalus and they're all worried sick about camp—but they don't know what to do about it. until they can come up with some brilliant plan to save thalia's tree, they figure they might as well go along with the races. after all, annabeth's mother, athena, had invented the chariot, and percy's father had created horses. lola's tasked with the decor and painting ❪ she's so excited to be of use when annabeth tells her that. she runs to get her materials and begins to make samples ❫. she's confident they'll own that track. and if they don't, she finds comfort in knowing they'll have the prettiest chariot there.
