THE NEXT FEW DAYS WERE NOT SUNNY, and lola is sure this brought tantalus joy. while tyson was happier than a man who'd just won the lottery because his friend was his half-brother, percy couldn't help but feel embarrassed. ashamed.
the other campers kept making mean comments about him. percy was no longer percy jackson, the cool guy who'd retrieved zeus' lightning bolt last summer. he was now percy jackson, the poor schmuck with a monster for a brother.
"he's not my real brother!" percy would protest whenever tyson wasn't around. "he's more like a half-brother on the monstrous side of the family. like... a half-brother twice removed, or something."
nobody bought it and he was a little angry with his father. being poseidon's son had become some sort of joke.
lola wanted to make him feel better but it's not like her words could shield him from everyone else's. so annabeth suggested they team up for the chariot race to distract themselves. they couldn't stand tantalus and they were all worried sick about camp—but they didn't know what to do about it. until they could come up with some brilliant plan to save thalia's tree, they figured they might as well go along with the races. after all, annabeth's mother, athena, had invented the chariot, and percy's father had created horses. lola would just be there for moral support because her job was at the end. she was tasked with the decor and painting ❪ she was so excited to be of use when annabeth told her that. she ran to get her materials and began to make samples ❫. she was confident they would own that track. and if they didn't, she found comfort in knowing they'd have the prettiest chariot there.
