Casey looked down, it was unfortunate, but what could she do. He was smaller than her when she wore heels, never would have worked out anyways. She didn't mean to sound offensive, but she loved heels.
"Sorry Max, I just don't think we're good for each other, I'm breaking up. We're over. I'm sorry. But we can't keep each other from finding our own way." Casey said this just soft enough that no one else could hear, except for Max and herself. It was a pity because he brought her flowers the first day they dated. It was only 2 weeks but it was 14 days too many.
Max nodded in understanding. He walked away, a look of sadness etched in his face.
"Hey girl, you just broke up with Max didn't you." Jess appeared behind her, scaring Casey.
"Hi Jess! Still good at scaring people." Casey joked. "Yeah I did."
"From all those nights sneaking out. I'm sorry." Jess enveloped Casey in a hug. She could smell Jess's vanilla perfume.
"Nah, it's fine. See you're still using that cupcake perfume. Surprised no one has tried to take a bite of you." Casey smiled.
"It's Vanilla." Jess rolled her eyes.
"Whatever." Casey replied.
The bell rang, and Casey turned away from Melissa, they had been chatting but now it was time for math. Casey had to study hard to get out of this godamn town. She hated it so.
Mr. Carleton talked, and Casey doodled, despite what it seemed she was listening. Casey just learned better by listening and drawing, next to her mathematical drawings was a small explanation. So technically they were notes.
A hand tapped her back. She turned ever so slightly to see what it was. A small notebook paper stuck out of Melissa's hand.
"What is it?" Casey whispered.
"Just take the note." Melissa replied.
Casey took it from Melissa's grasp. Hi ((: this math lessan is soooo boring. Casey sighed, Melissa still couldn't spell.
"Not now Melissa! Also lesson is spelled L E S S O N" Casey said harshly, her voice raising towards the end.
"Ms. Casey, have any mathematical eurekas to share?" Mr. Carleton asked.
"No." Casey replied looking down at her desk.
"Then why are you talking." He replied. He then walked back to the whiteboard.
A knock on the door awoke the mostly asleep class. Jess walked in, her teeth smiling, already sucking up to Mr. Carleton.
"Hello Ms. Jess, what do we owe the pleasure for?" He said.
"My history teacher, Mrs. Penny sent me to deliver a new stapler. She said your old one broke." Jess held out a stapler.
"Thank you Jess," Mr. Carleton walked over to where Jess was standing and took the stapler from her. "Tell Mrs. Penny I'm indebted to her. I needed to staple new math packets. You may go now."
"You don't mind if I grab a drink do you?" Jess pointed to the faucet.
"Of course not, go ahead." He replied.
Jess smiled and sauntered over to the drinking fountain. After she drank, Jess took a shortcut through the row where Casey sat.
She winked at Casey and Melissa. Then exited the room.
Casey turned back to the math lesson, Mr. Carleton was now drawing angles on the board. She smiled. Drawing was one of her strong suits, that was why she found makeup so easy. It was like drawing on your face. She copied down the angles. Adding small footnotes next to them.
A loud ahem from behind her made her turn around. Melissa smiled softly and kicked Casey with her foot.
"Been trying to get your attention for a while." She said softly.
"Melissa, is there something you need to share with the class, maybe that you need a cough drop." Mr. Carleton stared at her.
"No, sorry, I swallowed water down the wrong tube." Melissa pointed to her water bottle sitting innocently on the ground. She coughed again for the effect.
"Wonderful, I suggest covering your mouth next time, even though it was not germ related. The rest of us would prefer to stay healthy." Mr. Carleton said, and turned on his heels, once again facing the board to finish his sketch of the angles.
Melissa smiled softly at Casey and pressed something in her hand.
Casey recognized it as another note. "Melissa, I told you already, I want to pay attention, and not go to detention."
"Trust me, you'll like this one." Melissa's gaze turned to the board as well, signaling the end of the conversation.
Casey unfolded the note.
Hi Casey,
I gave this note to Melissa, becuz I knew u wouldn't grab it from my hand. Listen, u know how u were excited cause there's only two more. Well guess what. A new kid came to school. Ikr. And he's in my history class. & super cute!
Xoxo Jess
Casey folded it back up, and put it in the pocket of her cropped hoodie. It took a lot to make Jess say cute. Or actually call boys anything. Jess wasn't into boys. Yes, she was a lesbian. So that had to mean this new boy had to be exceptionally cute. Casey's attention faded away from math as she dreamed up the perfect new boy. He would have hockey length black hair, green eyes, a dreamy smile.
She spent the rest of math class obsessing over her perfect boy. When the bell rang for second period she got up slowly. Her day dragged on, until the bell rang for lunch.
