Part 1: Night at the Tavern
The tavern inside the Adventurer's Bureau was a lively but tense place, filled with the hum of low conversations and the clinking of mugs. Adventurers of all ranks gathered here, exchanging stories, strategies, and rumors. The atmosphere was heavy, as news of increased monster activity had spread throughout the city, casting a shadow over the usual camaraderie.
Enryu sat alone at a corner table, his sharp eyes observing the room while his mind focused on the task at hand. A steaming plate of his favorite dinner sat in front of him—roasted meat with herbs and a side of warm bread—and beside it, a cup of strong, black coffee. He took a slow sip, letting the bitter taste ground him as he unfolded a set of reports he had obtained earlier.
These were records of provisions carried out by other adventurers over the past few months. As Enryu scanned through the documents, he muttered quietly to himself, piecing together the pattern of events.
"Exponential spike in monster incidents... It's been getting worse, faster than expected," he murmured. His eyes narrowed as he noted the joint missions between the territory's army and the Adventurer's Bureau. "They've managed to suppress the effects so far, but this isn't addressing the root of the problem. Something's pushing these monsters out... something deeper."
He tapped the table thoughtfully, his mind racing. The reports indicated that the monster attacks were becoming more frequent and more organized, almost as if they were being driven by an unseen force. The defenses had held, but barely. If this continued unchecked, it wouldn't just be the outer territories at risk—the entire region could be destabilized.
Enryu's thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of a man in his mid-thirties, with short-cropped black hair and a sharp, focused gaze. He wore the official uniform of the Adventurer's Bureau, but it was clear from the way he carried himself that he had once been a seasoned adventurer. His build was solid, his posture upright, and there was a certain weight in his eyes that spoke of experience and responsibility.
"Enryu, isn't it?" the man said, his voice low and steady. "I'm Alaric, the head of this city's Adventurer's Bureau branch. I've been waiting to meet you."
Enryu looked up, his expression unreadable. "Alaric. I've heard of you. A capable leader."
Alaric nodded, pulling up a chair and sitting across from Enryu. "I received word from the central branch that you've taken on this investigation mission. I understand you're escorting a merchant group as well. How are they?"
"They're safe," Enryu replied, his tone measured. "But that might not last long if what I'm reading here is any indication."
Alaric sighed, rubbing his temples as if to ward off a headache. "You're right to be concerned. We've received reports from our scouts stationed at the surveillance posts around the city. There's a strong possibility of a monster stampede heading our way, and it's likely to hit within the next 24 hours."
Enryu's eyes narrowed. "A stampede? That's serious. I noticed the preparations around the city this afternoon—reinforcing the walls, moving people to safer areas—but I didn't realize it was this urgent."
"It is," Alaric confirmed, his expression grim. "The scouts reported that the monsters are gathering in larger numbers than we've ever seen. If they break through our defenses, it won't just be a few casualties. The entire city could be at risk, even with the evacuation efforts in place. The damage... it could be catastrophic."
Enryu considered this, the weight of the situation settling heavily on his shoulders. "What's the plan?"
"We're mobilizing every available adventurer and soldier to the front lines," Alaric explained. "We're also setting up fallback positions within the city in case the outer defenses fail. I won't lie to you—it's going to be a tough fight. That's why I'm asking for your help, Enryu. We need every capable hand we can get."
Enryu took a long sip of his coffee, his mind working through the implications. He had come here to investigate the root of the problem, but now it seemed he would have to fight on the front lines to protect the city. He had no doubt about the urgency—if this defense effort failed, the loss of life would be staggering.
"I'll help," Enryu said finally, his voice firm. "But I need to know everything—every detail, every weakness in our defenses. I want to meet with the key figures tomorrow morning before we take action."
Alaric nodded, relief flashing across his face. "You'll have what you need. We'll meet at dawn with the city's military leaders and the senior adventurers who'll be leading the defense. Get some rest tonight—we'll need you at your best."
Enryu gave a brief nod, watching as Alaric stood and left the tavern. The atmosphere seemed even heavier now, the weight of the impending battle pressing down on everyone.
Once alone again, Enryu took out a small, intricately carved stone from his bag—a communication device linked to his "Watch-Guard of Darkness" ability. With a subtle movement of his hand, he summoned a shadowy crow, a creature formed entirely from dark energy. He whispered a message to it, and the crow took flight, disappearing into the night, heading to a destination only Enryu knew.
He checked his magic watch again, noting the time and the toll his powers took on his body. The watch showed no immediate danger, but the night was far from over. With a final glance at the reports, Enryu stood, ready to retire for the night. The city was on the brink, and dawn would bring a fight that could decide its fate.
Enryu knew that the reinforcements would be arriving, but whether they would be enough remained to be seen. As he made his way to his room, he steeled himself for whatever awaited him in the morning.
