Part 2: Shadows of the Past and the Gathering Forces
Enryu was drifting through a world of shadows. In his dream, he found himself in a vast, empty landscape, where the ground beneath his feet seemed to dissolve with every step he took. Ahead of him, barely visible through the mist, were the faint silhouettes of people he once knew—friends, comrades, those who had once filled his heart with warmth and purpose.
But no matter how fast he ran, the distance between them only seemed to grow. His legs moved, but the ground crumbled away, turning his desperate strides into futile scrambles. The figures grew more distant, their features fading into the haze. He reached out, his hand trembling, but the shadows slipped through his fingers like smoke.
Suddenly, the ground gave way entirely, and he was falling into an abyss. The faces of his lost companions blurred into darkness, their voices echoing in his mind, reminding him of everything he had lost. As the void closed in around him, he felt the crushing weight of solitude—an endless, suffocating emptiness.
Enryu's eyes snapped open, and he was instantly alert. The room was dark, the only light coming from the faint glow of his magic watch. He remained still, his senses sharp, as he realized there was someone else in the room. His hand tightened around the hilt of his katana, and in one fluid motion, he drew the blade, prepared to strike.
The steel glinted in the dim light as it stopped mere inches from the intruder's throat. Enryu's breath caught as he recognized the figure before him—tall, imposing, with skin the color of midnight and eyes that glowed with a deep, unnatural red. His long, black hair cascaded down his back, and his presence exuded an aura of power and authority. It was Malaketh, the External Affairs Chief of The Eternal Shadow Guild.
Malaketh, realizing how close he had come to being struck down, held up his hands in a gesture of peace. "My apologies, Master," he said, his voice low and respectful. "I did not mean to startle you."
Enryu blinked, the remnants of his nightmare still clinging to his mind. He sheathed his sword, his heart rate slowly returning to normal. "Malaketh, we've discussed this," he said, his voice carrying a subtle rebuke. "You can't address me like that, not here."
Malaketh lowered his head, a gesture of contrition. "Of course... Enryu," he corrected himself, though the title felt strange on his tongue. "Forgive me. Old habits die hard."
Enryu sighed, his tone softening. "I know. But we're in the field now. We need to maintain our cover."
Malaketh nodded, adjusting his stance to something more casual, though it was clear he wasn't entirely comfortable with it. "I received your message," he said, his voice shifting to a more conversational tone, as Enryu had instructed. "I was already on my way to this city with the reinforcements, but when your crow arrived, I accelerated my pace. I've left the troops in the capable hands of my second-in-command and came here to offer my support."
Enryu looked at Malaketh, noting the faint traces of weariness in his normally implacable expression. Despite the exhaustion, there was a spark of joy in his eyes—relief, perhaps, at being reunited with his master, even under these circumstances.
"I appreciate your haste," Enryu said, his tone sincere. "This city needs all the help it can get. The situation is worse than I anticipated."
Malaketh's expression darkened as he considered the gravity of the situation. "Indeed. The reports from our scouts suggest that the monster horde is larger than anything we've seen before. If they reach the city, the casualties could be severe, even with the evacuation efforts."
Enryu's gaze hardened. "I was hoping we wouldn't have to resort to this, but if the defense lines are close to breaking, I want you to be prepared to mobilize the 7 great demon generals under your command."
