Part 1: Nightfall After the Battle

The night after the battle was a mixture of joy and sorrow. The victorious cries of the living mingled with the somber silence of those mourning their fallen comrades. The battlefield was now a landscape of shadows, illuminated by the flickering light of torches and the soft glow of healing magic at the medical posts. Reinforcement troops, still weary from the fight, moved among the wounded, offering aid and comfort. The air was thick with the scent of blood and the lingering echoes of war, yet a tentative peace had settled over the city.

Amidst the activity, several groups carefully tended to the bodies of those who had given their lives in defense of the city. The process was solemn, marked by whispered prayers and the soft rustle of cloth as the fallen were covered and prepared for their final rites.

In the command tent, the atmosphere was one of exhausted relief. Several key figures who had led the defense were gathered, their faces etched with fatigue and determination. Among them were nobles who had bravely fought on the front lines, their bodies bearing the scars of battle. The city knight leader and the Head of the Adventurer Bureau sat at the large central table, their armor battered and bloodstained, yet their resolve unbroken. Malaketh stood nearby, his expression serious as he reviewed reports with the others.

Joining them were the new arrivals: Eivor, the Viking warrior and chief of the Knight Warriors under The Eternal Shadow Guild, stood tall, her presence commanding respect. Beside her was the Captain of the Magic Knights from the Black Magic Tower, a stern figure whose gaze seemed to pierce through the chaos. And at the head of the table, the Master of the Black Magic Tower, Nocturne, observed the proceedings with quiet intensity.

Eivor spoke first, her voice steady despite the weariness that clung to everyone present. "The Eternal Shadow Guild has developed a defense network that can rapidly deploy our forces using advanced communication and teleportation systems. This will allow us to respond swiftly to any future threats and prevent incidents like this from escalating."

The city knight leader, still recovering from a deep gash across his shoulder, nodded in agreement. "We've already seen how effective the reinforcements were today. With this network in place, we can reinforce our defenses across the territory more efficiently."

Nocturne listened carefully, his dark eyes assessing the situation. "The Black Magic Tower will continue to monitor the energy signatures we've detected. The artifact Enryu sent us contains traces of forbidden magic—magic that should not exist under the regulation of the Magic Council. This situation is more dire than we initially thought."

The Captain of the Magic Knights added, "Our forces will remain here to assist in the city's recovery. We are at your disposal, Lady Eivor."

Eivor inclined her head in acknowledgment. "Thank you. We'll need all the help we can get to restore the city's defenses and prepare for what may come."

The discussion concluded with plans for a celebration that night, a moment to honor the victory and those who had fallen, followed by a tribute the next day. The atmosphere in the tent was heavy with the weight of what had been lost, but there was also a sense of determination—of a future that could still be protected.

In Enryu's resting room, which Nocturne had already isolated with magic to ensure the discussion inside was protected from outside, Enryu sat propped against the pillows, his body aching from the battle. Malaketh and Nocturne stood by his bedside, their expressions a mixture of concern and respect.

"We need to plan our next steps," Enryu began, his voice hoarse from exhaustion. "Nocturne, you must return to the Magic Council and warn them of what we've discovered. The artifact... it's a sign of something far worse."

Nocturne frowned, clearly reluctant to leave. "I would rather stay and assist you in the investigation, teacher. This situation is too dangerous for you to handle alone."

Enryu shook his head. "You have a greater responsibility. The Magic Council needs to be prepared. Your presence there is vital."

Nocturne sighed, recognizing the truth in Enryu's words. "Very well, but I will not leave you unprotected. I will set up a private magic system for you, one that will lessen the burden on your abilities and allow us to communicate without detection. And I will send someone I trust to support you—someone who can represent the Black Magic Tower in this investigation."

Enryu nodded, appreciating the gesture. "Thank you, Nocturne. Your support means a great deal."

Nocturne then produced a small scroll from within his robes, handing it to Enryu. "This is my preliminary report on the artifact you sent. The energy within it is connected to a form of magic that the Magic Council has long banned. Since the Council was established and the 9 Magic Towers formed, all magic practiced on this continent has been logged and regulated by the Continental Magic System. This system was designed to detect and prevent the use of forbidden magic, especially anything that could cause widespread harm."

Enryu unrolled the scroll, his eyes scanning the detailed notes. "So this is beyond what the Council can detect?"

"Yes," Nocturne confirmed. "It's being masked somehow, but the source of the energy is unmistakable. This is serious, teacher. Whatever is behind this is powerful enough to bypass the safeguards we've put in place."

Enryu's expression darkened. "Then we have no time to waste. We need to uncover who or what is responsible."

Nocturne's eyes softened with concern. "Please, teacher, take care of yourself. You've pushed yourself too far already."

Before Enryu could respond, Malaketh stepped forward. "Master, if I may... I believe it would be best if I accompanied you on this investigation. I cannot, in good conscience, leave your side after what has happened."

Enryu looked at Malaketh, seeing the fierce loyalty in his eyes. "You are needed at the Guild, Malaketh. Vorath is preparing the defenses, and your support is crucial there."

Malaketh clenched his fists, clearly struggling with the decision. "I cannot stand by while you face this threat alone."

Their debate grew more heated, with Malaketh insisting on accompanying Enryu until finally, a compromise was reached. "If I must stay at the Guild," Malaketh said, his voice strained, "then allow me to send one of the 7 Sisters to aid you. She specializes in tracking and will be invaluable in this investigation."

Enryu hesitated, then nodded. "Very well. But remember, Malaketh, your role at the Guild is just as important. I need you to ensure everything is in place there."

Malaketh bowed deeply, his voice filled with resolve. "As you wish, Master."

The discussion ended with Enryu instructing both Nocturne and Malaketh to prepare everything before he departed in two days and asking them to rest and leave him alone in his room.

Outside, the city was alive with a mix of celebrations and mourning, the joy of victory tempered by the heavy losses. But inside his room, Enryu felt a deep sense of emptiness. The quiet calm he sought seemed just out of reach, a fleeting feeling that he desperately needed to rest.

As the night wore on, Enryu lay back, closing his eyes and letting the sounds of the city fade into the background. He thought of the battles to come, of the challenges that awaited him, and of the friends and enemies who would cross his path. But most of all, he thought of the stillness he yearned for—the peace that had eluded him for so long.

With a final, weary sigh, Enryu allowed himself to drift into sleep, hoping that, for tonight at least, he could find the calm he so desperately needed.
