The late afternoon sun cast a golden hue over Hawthorn Academy, bathing the campus in a warm, gentle light. Kirianahad spent most of the day in the library, pouring over notes and clues related to the recent threats. She was immersed in her work when she noticed a shift in her surroundings—a subtle but distinct change in Daniel's behavior, who sat across from her.

Daniel had been acting unusually attentive, his focus frequently drifting to Kiriana whenever they were together. Today, as they met in the library for a brief study session, his curiosity seemed more pronounced than usual.

"Kiri," Daniel began, glancing at the small ribbon tied in her hair. It was a delicate piece of satin, its soft blue colour contrasting with her dark hair. "I've been meaning to ask you about that ribbon you always wear. It's pretty distinctive."

Kiriana, taken aback by the question, gently touched the ribbon that was holding a small braid at the side of her head. It was a personal item, one she had worn for as long as she could remember. "This ribbon has been with me for a long time. It belonged to my mother."

Daniel's interest deepened. "Really? How did it come to be so important to you?"

Kiriana took a breath, the memories surfacing as she spoke. "My mother gave it to me when I was very young. It was her way of keeping me close to her, even when she couldn't be around. She passed away when I was a young child, no older than four, and this ribbon is one of the few things I have left from her."

Daniel's eyes softened with empathy. "I'm sorry to hear that. It must hold a lot of meaning for you."

Kiriana nodded, her gaze meeting his. "It does. It's not just a ribbon; it's a connection to my past and a source of comfort."

Daniel looked at her with a mix of admiration and something else—an emotion that Kiriana was unfamiliar of but that made her heart skip a beat. The sincerity in his eyes was disarming, and for a moment, she felt a warmth that went beyond friendship.

Kiriana allowed herself a small, teasing smile. "You know, Daniel, it's not often someone takes such a keen interest in my personal belongings. Are you trying to get to know me better?"

Daniel blushed slightly, his expression a mix of surprise and curiosity. "Maybe I am. I've always found you fascinating, Kiri. There's so much more to you than what meets the eye."

She chuckled softly, her smile widening. "Is that so? I suppose I should be flattered. Or perhaps wary, if you're trying to uncover too many of my secrets."

Daniel's smile grew, a playful glint in his eyes. "I'd never do that. I just want to understand the person behind the detective."

Kiriana's heart fluttered at his words. For a brief moment, the walls she had carefully constructed around herself seemed to lower. But she quickly reminded herself of the importance of maintaining her composure, something that she has been trained to do since she was small. The dangers they now faced are another reminder as to why she must always keep a stone cold expression. It was hard to be so stoic when she always had someone as optimistic as Daniel around.

She cleared her throat, her expression returning to its usual stoic demeanor. "Well, I suppose there's no harm in sharing a bit. But let's keep our focus on the investigation. There are more pressing matters at hand."

Daniel nodded, his gaze lingering on her with a mixture of respect and unspoken emotions. "Of course. We'll get back to work."

As they turned their attention back to their notes and research, Kiriana felt a mix of emotions—gratitude for Daniel's interest, curiosity about his feelings, and the persistent reminder of the challenges they faced. Despite the fleeting moment of intimacy, the reality of their situation brought her back to her primary concern: solving the mysteries and ensuring their safety.
