My hands were clenched against the black stone countertop as I waited for the elevator, tension tightening my back. Everything within me had screamed to send Janis away. To tell her right now wasn't a good time. To make her come by the office instead. Anything but let her come up to the penthouse. But then I'd thought of her reaction. How she might question me. She was relentless when she fixated on something and she would definitely fixate on this. She lived for secrets. Particularly, my secrets. I hadn't minded her nosiness before. She had always remained tight lipped about my personal life. It was why we got along so well. We respected each other's privacy. We understood each other.
But this situation was different. With Nunew, I couldn't take any chances.
The ding of the elevator jolted me out of my thoughts. My jaw pulsed as I swallowed. Every muscle inside of me was strung taut. I hoped this would play out quickly. No lingering conversations. No questions as to why I was standing fucking shirtless in my kitchen looking half wrecked from the sex last night. Let her assume I'd been out all night. Let her assume it was my usual routine. One that she accepted. One that she was all too familiar with herself.
Long nails tapped against the keypad, the sound of the deadbolt unlocking echoing down the hallway before I heard the door open to the penthouse. I steeled myself, watching as she strolled into the kitchen. Her long silky hair swished as she walked, stray tendrils tucked behind her ears, chocolate eyes glancing around the room. She was perfection as usual, dressed in a long cream midi with thin straps and dainty gold jewelry. Her outfit was tied together with her favorite Chanel hanging casually from her shoulder. My teeth ground together.
"What took you so long, Zee? I thought my finger was going to fall off from ringing your damn buzzer so much." Her glossy pink lips were pulled into a pout as she neared the counter, her arms shuffling something.
"Do you realize what time it is?" I let go of the counter, my arms coming to cross over my chest.
Janis glanced around the room, as if searching for the time. After another moment she shrugged. "This couldn't wait."
"Really?" My voice dripped with sarcasm as I spared another glance at the item held within her arms.
She shuffled towards me, her arms finally opening as she dropped a large binder on the kitchen counter. "I need you to look through this and pick your favorites. We can give our choices to my father and settle this wedding shit once and for all."
My pulse roared, anger and anxiety coursing through my veins as she spoke. I stared at the binder, barely able to breathe, praying to every fucking higher being that Nunew couldn't hear this conversation. For once, I hoped he had listened to me and stayed in the bedroom. I couldn't risk him finding out. Not like this. Fuck.
"Is that it?" My voice was strained. Rough. Filled with irritation.
Janis stared at me, her lips now pressing into a tight line as she shuffled the purse on her shoulder.
