TW: Swearing, mention of death, angst

NINA'S POV

Croft. I've always hated everything about that name and the woman herself. Subsequently we found out she had a daughter. Almost like a replica to the woman herself. I had only seen the daughter Croft a few times myself, but Ronnie always told me when he went out on patrols he'd see her climbing mountains or something dangerous. I'd brush him off. I didn't care about the Crofts. Well... I thought I didn't.. till that night occurred.

{FLASH BACK}

12 years ago

I raced through the smoke covering the Trinity camp as I coughed up my lungs. 'Where is he?' I thought hopeless to find my father. The general of Trinity. I looked around my eyes weeping with tears from the smoke and from my panic. "DAD!" I cried out hoping for an answer back from him before I started to hear speaking, shouting, clashing of metal. I turned my head running over quickly ducking behind some old wooden barrels. As I peeked over had spotted my father who was fighting someone.... A woman.... A familiar woman... And not just any familiar woman... Lara Croft. I let out a small gasp of fear as all I could do was watch, my body frozen in fear, my hands clutching on the barrel in front of me turning my knuckles pale. I watched as the woman used her climbing axe to impale my father straight through the head. His movements stilled, his chest stopped moving. Blood slowly trickled down his face before his body collapsed which ended up making me to scream in terror, fear, and other emotions I didn't know existed. The woman looked over to me and just stared. Not even blinking when she saw me. Like she was a stone statue or something like that. I stared back froze in fear, my chest briskly rising and fall in fear before I stood up giving the woman a final look before I turned on my heels and bolted out of there, I could hear footsteps behind me before they slowly faded... then just disappeared, but I didn't dare look back. I kept running till I ran into the arms of someone.. a familiar young boy. Ronnie. My best friend. I hugged him and broke down, tears flooding down my cheeks like a waterfall after a storm, as I allowed him start to drag me out of the smoke and chaos. I had just witnessed my own father's death. Something I could of stopped. But I didn't.. and worse.. A Croft killed him....

{END OF FLASH BACK}

My right hand clenched around my weapon at the bitter memory. He didn't deserve to die. At least not in the way he did. Trinity had been training me since that moment, making me stronger so I could avenge my father. By killing Croft. So when I heard about the new Croft I knew this was my chance to avenge him. By taking out the daughter...

I looked down at the file between my left fingers, I felt pride in my chest as it was a bit on the woman I was hunting as I read over it with a small smirk on my lips followed by a chuckle.

I glanced back up overtop of the Trinity camp below me, smoke rising from the old campfires as tents and weapons were starting to be packed up. I had it all planned out on how I'd kill this Croft. Using my blade as I slowly cut open her throat staring into her eyes... I'd make it slow and painful so she had to suffer and I'd be the last thing she saw till the gods above. I'd be a hero. The Hero Of Trinity. Who wouldn't want that?

My father would be proud.

FREYA'S POV

"It's has to be in my mother's notes Nick!" I said waving my arms around in an annoyed way.

Trinity had been getting closer to the Artifact of the Sly faster then I have. Of course I didn't blame Nick. I'm just mad.  Maybe at my mother's useless notes. I groaned tossing the book into the pile next to the window as the moonlight filtered in over the lamps and candles. Nick had tried turning on the main power but I cursed him not to. In case unwanted attention came, they already thought my grand-father and my mother were crazy in the head. I didn't want to be the next Croft to lose their shit.

I paused finding old photos of my mother and her group. I never saw her as much as a normal child.. but I didn't care. I'm who I am because of her raising methods.. Nick always said it wasn't good or healthy, but he knows I ignore him. Especially while I'm too focused on finding this Artifact not even my grand-father could find. Artifact of  the Sly. Critters of the world protect it with their lives. With buffs making them stronger and bigger than average. That's what the famous Lara Croft told me at least. I sighed throwing another book down.

"Hey Rey?" Nick's voice came from somewhere else in the room.

It made me look up in confusion and curiosity, I quickly moved towards Nick finding him behind a pile of boxes.

"What did you find?" I asked him peeking over his shoulder on my tippy toes.

Nick turned  with a book in his hands opening to a page that was old and crinkled, yet I could still see the known outline of the words. 'Artifact of the Sly.' I let out a gasp and snatch the book from his hands walking over to a candle and slammed the book on the desk as the candle's flame danced it revealed more words and sketches of the artifact. My eyes glowed against the flame. This could be the answers. Everything I'm looking for. Right in my hands... My thoughts were going crazy.

My eyes scanning over the page. Damana. The Cursed Isle.

"Of fucking course. The one place that no one every survives." I groaned as I just let my body fall backwards onto the hard wood below me.

Nick winced slightly and helped back up my ears ringing in pain. I rubbed the back of my neck as I gained my balance again. I nodded slightly to him then looked back to the book and stepped closer picking up the book again, my eyes scanning over the text muttering and mumbling over a few words before pausing.

"Nick... This artifact.. If Trinity gets to it.. the dangers they will bring to the world... They'll have all the power they need to destroy anyone in their path." I said slowly my words careful yet shaky. He stared at me like I was mad.

"Rey, you realise this could be a myth? Just like-." I quickly cut him off.

"That was 4 years ago. Let it go Nick. Let. It. Go." I said firmly narrowing my gaze at him. He out his hands up defensively with a small shrug

"Alright.. But still....." He said something else but I was already focused back on the pages reading over the artifact. My thoughts fuzzy but one stood out the most. How will I get to Damana? And.. How will I get back? I sighed pushing my hair back out of my face as I sat on the table looking over to Nick who was watching out the window with a serious look on his face. I knew what he was thinking but I wasn't going to admit it. I had a chance to save this world. And I'd do it with or without Nick by my side.
