Today was the day of the races, how that will go down, Matilda does not know. But, usually the races were quite entertaining for the girl— only this time she knew something was bound to go down with Billy Kimber.Earlier on in the day she heard of Ada and Freddie Thornes wedding, they got married in secret. She must admit, she did feel a little resentment towards her sister for not informing her of her marriage, yet on the other hand she could understand the reason as to why no one was present.
Thomas was that reason. Despite Freddie being Tommy's best friend; Matilda knew a marriage between that man and his sister would not go down well with Thomas.
She also heard of the entire robbery situation— well, in reality she just gathered more information about it than what her brothers supplied her with. She wasn't going to ask or ponder upon the situation, yet what she did know was that guns were involved, as were the peaky blinders.
Currently, Matilda, Finn, and their Aunt Polly were situated in the Shelby living room. The young boy was falling asleep on both their laps, his head on Polly's, and his legs rested on his sisters.
Everything was so peaceful, well that was until Tommy walked in. The older signalled him to be quiet by pressing her finger against her lips, silently telling him that Finn was in a slumber.
Thomas shut the door quietly before removing his peaky cap and taking a seat on the armchair across where the other two women were sat. He took a swig of whatever alcohol was placed in front of him.
Something was wrong, Matilda could sense it.
A hand rubbed his face— as if a symbol of showing his frustration. It was only when he pulled out a wad of money and slammed it on the table that Matilda grew confused. Though, by the look on Polly's eyes, she could tell she knew what was going on.
"Freddie didn't want your money." He said simply. Matilda cocked an eyebrow up in confusion. Finn was still sleeping. "Now the coppers are saying if we don't turn Freddie in they'll put Ada on the arrest warrant as well. That's where your compassion gets you, Poll."
Matilda's mouth dropped open in shock, "I beg your pardon? Sorry, but what on earth is going on here?" She asked, her tone laced with worry and frustration.
Thomas looked at her, "why don't you tell her yourself, Polly?"
"If this is about Ada and Freddie's wedding, then I already know." The sixteen year old scoffed, "but what's all this about putting Ada on an arrest warrant?"
"From now on we do it my way," Tommy said, his voice low and husky, yet hiding some sort of a warning behind it.
Polly's eyes were fierce, she was not a woman to be tampered or messed with. "Or what?" She replied, her tone matching her nephews.
Thomas looked down momentarily before sighing, his head cocked back upwards. And with that, no words, no more sighs, he got up and left without asking anymore questions. Only leaving Matilda in a deeper state of confusion.
This time, he did slam the door.
"What was all that about?" Matilda asked, keeping her voice down low despite the loud bang of the door.
Polly sighed, brushing the girl off with a waft of her hand, "no more questions, you. Go on, go get yourself ready. Thomas will be back soon."
Matilda, her movements graceful, nodded in agreement as she gently shifted her brother off her lap, a soft smile playing on her lips. With a sense of purpose, she ascended the creaking stairs to her bedroom, the wooden floorboards echoing her steps.
