The commander should not have been jealous when he saw how she was looking into that boy's eyes with an intensity she had only shown him. He should not have felt hope that she, perhaps, might return to herself because of that boy. He should not have allowed himself to fantasize, however briefly, that she might make a full recovery and join him of her own volition. He should have shouted the second he came upon the scene instead of watching it play out.
And he certainly should not be afraid now, as she stands on the steps to the base, a strange golden glow flickering across her skin.
