The next day at school, the sun filtered through the large windows of the classroom, casting warm, golden patches on the floor. The chatter of students filled the room as everyone settled into their seats, ready for another day of lectures and assignments. Aarav Malhotra, however, was distracted. His thoughts were still tangled up in the events of the previous day and the confusing emotions that had followed him into the night.
He took a deep breath and tried to focus on the task at hand—group assignments in English class. The teacher, Mrs. Sharma, had announced the groups, and Aarav found himself paired with Kabir, Rhea, and a new transfer student named Siddharth.
Siddharth was the type of guy who seemed to glide effortlessly through life. Tall, charming, and with an easy smile that made girls giggle, he had quickly become the center of attention in the class. Aarav had nothing against the guy—at least, not until he noticed the way Siddharth had been hovering around Meera all morning, clearly trying to impress her.
“Alright, let’s get started,” Siddharth said cheerfully as he slid into a seat beside Meera, leaning in a little too close for Aarav’s liking. “This project is going to be a blast, don’t you think?”
Meera smiled, seeming completely oblivious to Siddharth’s overt flirtation. “Yeah, it should be fun,” she replied, turning her attention to her notebook.
But Aarav wasn’t oblivious. He watched as Siddharth leaned in even closer, his arm brushing against Meera’s. It was a casual touch, but something about it made Aarav’s jaw clench. That uncomfortable, unfamiliar knot tightened in his chest, and he found it increasingly hard to focus on anything but the scene unfolding in front of him.
“So, Meera,” Siddharth said, his voice smooth, “what do you think of the school so far? I’ve only been here a few days, but I’m already loving it. Especially meeting someone as interesting as you.”
Aarav’s grip on his pen tightened involuntarily. He tried to tell himself it was nothing. Meera was just being polite, and Siddharth was just being friendly. But the more he watched Siddharth flirt with Meera, the more that knot twisted tighter.
“Oh, it’s a great place,” Meera replied, smiling warmly. “You’ll settle in soon enough.”
Aarav’s gaze narrowed as Siddharth laughed, leaning even closer to Meera. “Well, with you around, I think I’m going to enjoy it even more.”
That was it. Aarav couldn’t take it anymore. Before he realized what he was doing, he started tearing at the corner of his assignment sheet, his frustration and jealousy bubbling up uncontrollably. The noise was subtle but enough to catch Kabir’s attention, who glanced at Aarav with a puzzled expression.
