Krista returned home that evening and the smile hadn’t weakened on her face. She still had work to do, so she opened up her laptop. She checked her email before she started work, as usual. She had an email from the git, so she reluctantly opened it. It wasn’t pleasant, though neither was the man who had written it. This time though the message displayed the true nature of the smart suited male, whose name was signed bluntly at the bottom:
Dear Krista,
Things are not moving fast enough. You need to pull your grubby finger out or your entire department will be fired, including you. You haven’t yet proven to me that you are sophisticated, only that you are aggressive. I would ask you nicely but I don’t care about your feelings or whether or not you aren’t happy with the current situation. Do it or else.
Dean James
Head of sales and distribution
Krista was fuming. No one had ever spoken to her like that, and she didn’t appreciate it. She closed down her email and sat back in her chair, her thoughts now firmly focused on getting this story right. She set about continuing her article spread, focusing first on the contents before worrying about the presentation. She must have fallen asleep because she awoke suddenly to the sound of her phone ringing. Assuming it would be Mr James she answered it crudely.
“What do you want?”
“I’m sorry, maybe I should call back later”
“Kian, I am so sorry, I assumed it would be my boss and he has really been annoying me recently”
“I understand, anyway, I was wondering if you were busy tonight”
“Actually I am, I have to go to some stupid la de da ball thing for work. The person who was supposed to be covering it is ill, so I stepped in”
“You love working don’t you?”
“I suppose, why did you want to know if I was free?”
“I was gonna invite you as my plus one to this la de da ball thing, but it sounds as though you are already going, coincidence?”
“Maybe, or maybe it was fate” Krista was well aware that she was flirting, and it felt unnatural to her.
“Ha, maybe, well, I’ll see you later, I’m sure you will look stunning”
“Okay, see you there”
Krista hung up first and had to sit down from the shock. Then her phone rang again, and this time, it was her boss.
“Mr James what a nice surprise” the sarcasm was evident in her intonation.
“I would say the same but I’m not a liar. What’s going on, we have record that he called you moments ago”
“It turns out we are going to the same ball tonight, I’m covering for a friend who’s sick”
“What a coincidence”
“Were you listening in on my conversation?”
“No, I don’t have the equipment unfortunately”
“More like fortunately for me”
“Whatever just make sure that you get the job done”
“This is only the third time I have ever met how am I suppo-” She didn’t get to finish her sentence because he hung up on her. Krista let out an angry scream and moved on to getting changed. Work had supplied her with a dress already, so she set about showering and changing into it. It was much more beautiful than the first. But this time it was shorter, coming to above the knees, and was skin tight. Luckily it fit perfectly. It was deep red and went well with Krista’s brunette hair. She was finally ready to go, but this time she went by cab, as a car wasn’t supplied for her.
