The conference hall was filled with the chatter of professionals, their conversations creating a background noise as I tried to focus on the day's events. This annual gathering of forensic scientists was meant to be an opportunity for collaboration and networking, but I barely registered the significance of it all. I had hoped that being in a different environment would give me a short break from the turmoil that had taken over my life. The interesting talks on forensic science were meant to distract me, offering a temporary escape from the constant presence of Maestro. Yet, his visit 3 days ago, haunted me, lingering at the edge of my thoughts, refusing to be silenced.
Emily had insisted on coming with me, seeing it as an opportunity for both of us to recharge. But as we moved through the sea of forensic professionals and polished presentations, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease.
Emily, cheerful and relaxed, chatted with a group of colleagues, her voice calm against the chaos in my mind. She caught my eye from across the room and smiled warmly. I tried to smile back, but it felt empty.
"Ava, you look like you're in another world," Emily said, joining me as I stood by the refreshment table, staring blankly at the untouched coffee in my hand.
"Yeah, just... tired," I replied, not meeting her eyes.
Emily frowned, concern flashing in her gaze. "You've been off for a while now. It's not just the workload, is it? I mean, you've handled worse. Is it something else? Someone else?"
My stomach twisted at the unspoken question in her voice. If only she knew how deep this went. How impossible it was to explain what I was dealing with.
Before I could come up with a reassuring lie, a voice interrupted us.
"Dr. Paxton?"
I turned to see a tall man with a confident smile approaching. He had the air of someone used to getting what he wanted, and his eyes lingered on me in a way that made my skin crawl, though he was all politeness on the surface.
"Yes?" I asked, forcing a neutral tone.
"Daniel, from Westbrook Labs. I've been following your work for some time now. It's truly impressive." His smile widened, and I noticed Emily raise an eyebrow beside me, clearly curious about this sudden attention.
"Thank you," I replied, my tone flat as I instinctively moved a little closer to Emily.
"I was hoping we could discuss your recent findings over dinner," Daniel continued smoothly, ignoring the subtle distance I had put between us. "I'd love to hear more about your thoughts on the latest developments in forensic analysis."
Emily grinned at me. "Ava, that sounds like a great opportunity."
I opened my mouth to decline, but before I could respond, my phone buzzed in my hand. I glanced down at the screen, and my blood ran cold.
