Shan, now 16, had always been the fun-loving one at Royal College. He was the boy who could make anyone laugh, the one who played pranks on the teachers, and the friend who would do anything to cheer someone up.
Whether it was sneaking into the school after hours to play cricket under the moonlight or convincing his friends to skip class for a spontaneous beach day, Shan’s love for life was contagious.
One afternoon, after doing well on a tough math exam, Shan and his friends decided to celebrate.
They rushed to Galle Face Green, laughing and joking as they bought kites to fly. As they ran along the grassy field, Shan’s laughter echoed through the air, his joy so real that no one would suspect the sadness he hid inside.
His closest friends, Sahan and Nishan, admired him for his courage and energy.
“Shan, you’re always doing something wild,” Sahan laughed, trying to keep up with him.
“Do you ever take a break?”
Shan grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Why take a break when life is so much fun? We’ve got to enjoy every moment, guys!”
The three of them collapsed onto the grass, out of breath and thrilled. They watched the kites dance in the wind, feeling like nothing could bring them down. Shan’s laughter was the loudest of them all, but deep inside, he felt a cold emptiness—a hole that no amount of fun could fill.
When the day’s excitement ended and his friends went their separate ways, Shan walked home alone, the smile fading from his face as the familiar weight of loneliness settled over him. The boy who had seemed so full of life just hours ago now felt like an empty shell, burdened by memories of his mother and the coldness of his father.
