It wasn’t until a few months later that Shan met Muthuu. It was another rainy afternoon, and he was on his way home from school, soaked and lost in thought.
As he took his usual shortcut through a small alley, he noticed a girl from Vishaka College struggling with a broken umbrella, trying to stay dry.
Something about the sight of her—so vulnerable, yet so determined—caught Shan’s attention. He walked over, his heart pounding for reasons he couldn’t explain.
“Do you need some help?” he asked, his voice softer than usual.
The girl looked up, surprised by his sudden appearance.
Her wide, brown eyes met his, and for a moment, neither of them spoke. Then she nodded, her expression a mix of relief and embarrassment.
“I... my umbrella broke, and I was just trying to wait out the rain.”
Shan smiled, feeling an unexpected warmth spread through him.
“Come on, let me walk you home. We can share my umbrella.”
She hesitated for a moment, then nodded again, a small smile forming on her lips.
“Thank you.”
As they walked together in the rain, Shan couldn’t help but glance at her now and then. She seemed so calm, so composed, despite the situation. He felt a strange connection to her, as if something deep inside him recognized something deep inside her.
“I’m Shan,” he said after a while, trying to keep his voice casual.
“Muthuu,” she replied, her voice soft and gentle.
The rain continued to pour, but Shan barely noticed. For the first time in a long while, he felt something other than the heavy sadness that had been with him all the time. He didn’t know what it was about Muthuu that drew him in, but he knew he wanted to see her again.
