The classroom buzzed with the usual chatter as I walked into my math lesson, trying to shake off the lingering awkwardness from earlier. Teresa and I had been walking to class together, and I could tell she was still preoccupied with her feelings for Aris. I had tried to reassure her, but now that we were here, it was time to focus on the lesson.
I found my assigned seat next to Patrick, a boy who was pretty popular around school. His seat was just a couple of rows from the front, and he always seemed to have this effortless charm about him. He was one of those guys who could make even the most mundane things seem interesting, and while I didn't know him very well, I knew enough to be polite.
"Hey, Kavya," Patrick said with a friendly smile as I sat down. "How's it going?"
"Hey, Patrick," I replied, returning his smile. "I'm good. Just trying to get through this math class."
"Same here," he said, chuckling. "This stuff can be a bit of a drag, but at least it's almost lunchtime. Got any plans for today?"
I started to respond, but then he said something that caught me off guard. "You know, I've seen you around a lot. You always seem to be with Teresa and Newt. You're kind of like the quiet one in the group."
I raised an eyebrow, slightly taken aback. "Is that so?"
"Yeah," Patrick said, shrugging. "Just an observation. I've seen you at lunch and around the school. You don't really stand out, but there's something about you that's... intriguing."
His comment made me feel uneasy. It was flattering in a weird way, but it also felt a little invasive. I pushed the thought aside and decided to focus on the lesson instead.
The class went by fairly uneventfully after that, with Mr. Stevens droning on about quadratic equations while I tried to keep up with the notes. Patrick occasionally leaned over to ask me if I was following along, which was nice but didn't do much to alleviate my growing discomfort. I kept glancing at the clock, eager for the end of the period.
When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of class, I packed up my things quickly and headed out to meet Teresa and Newt for early lunch. The cafeteria was already starting to fill up, but we managed to find a table near the back where we could talk without too much noise.
"Hey, how was math?" Teresa asked as I slid into a seat next to her.
"It was fine," I said, grabbing a sandwich from my bag. "Patrick was being a bit strange, but nothing major."
Newt looked up from his own lunch, his curiosity piqued. "Strange how?"
I hesitated for a moment, unsure how much to share. "He made a comment about me being the 'quiet one' and said something about me being 'intriguing.' It was just a little weird."
Teresa frowned, her concern evident. "That does sound strange. Maybe he was just trying to be friendly?"
"Yeah, maybe," I said, though I wasn't entirely convinced. We moved on to other topics, and the rest of lunch passed in a relaxed and pleasant manner. We joked around, ate our food, and talked about plans for the weekend. It was a welcome distraction from the uncomfortable encounter earlier.
