Addy sat in the backseat of the car, quietly bouncing her leg in excitement. She was finally going on a run, something she'd been wanting to do for a while now. She still couldn't believe Daryl had said yes. He'd always been the most protective over her and Ottilie, never wanting them to be in danger. That's why he wouldn't let her ride on his bike this time, which had been disappointing, but at least she was here.
Glenn drove, while Michonne sat in the front passenger seat, her katana resting on her lap. Every now and then, Glenn would glance back at Addy through the rearview mirror and smile, giving her some reassurance.
Glenn glanced in the rearview mirror with a small smile, catching her eye. "You doing okay back there?" he asked.
Addy nodded, her hands resting on her lap. "Yeah, I'm good. Just ready to do this."
Michonne chuckled from the passenger seat. "First run is always the hardest. Just stick close to us, and you'll be fine."
After a while, the car pulled up to what looked like an old store, fenced off like a small fortress. Addy perked up and practically bounced out of the car before it had fully stopped. She quickly walked over to Daryl, who was dismounting his bike, and stood by his side, not wanting to give him any reason to regret bringing her along.
There were some army tents set up outside the store, with logs and supplies scattered around. It looked like people had once lived here, maybe even had some hope like their group did back at the prison. Addy noticed music playing softly in the distance, but she didn't think much of it.
Daryl ruffled her hair like he always did, and she smiled up at him. Despite his tough exterior, she knew he cared deeply for her and Ottilie.
Daryl, his crossbow ready in his hands, surveyed the area as the others gathered around. "Army came in and put these fences up," he explained to the group. "Made it a place for people to go. Last week, when we spotted this place, there was a bunch of walkers behind this chain link, keeping people out like a bunch of guard dogs."
Bob chimed in, "So they all just left?"
Addy looked around curiously. It was strange, there were no walkers, no people. Just silence and the distant sound of music.
"Give a listen," Sasha said, tilting her head toward the source of the music.
Everyone fell silent, their ears tuning in to the sound. The music was definitely drawing walkers away, and Michonne spoke up, "You drew them out?"
Sasha nodded, "Put a boom box out there three days ago."
Glenn added, "Hooked it up to two car batteries."
Addy thought it was a smart idea. She tucked it away in her mind, something she could maybe use in the future.
Daryl turned to Addy, looking her in the eye. "You stay with me the whole time, got it?"
Addy nodded eagerly. "I got it."
Daryl stood up and addressed the rest of the group, "All right, let's make a sweep. Make sure it's safe. Grab what you can, we'll come back tomorrow with more people."
The group moved through a gap in the fence, and Addy followed closely behind Daryl. Her hand stayed on the handle of her knife that was in her belt as she cautiously glanced around, ready for anything. People broke off to check the army tents, but Daryl kept moving forward toward the front of the store, his crossbow still raised and ready.
