Inside the hospital, Phil's mom, Sarah Lawson, was in her hospital bed, her body weak from the chemotherapy. The once-vibrant woman had been worn down by the disease, and now, in her fragile state, she was more irritable than ever. Phil sat beside her, silent as usual.

She didn't talk to him much these days, and when she did, it was usually to blame him for something—the late bills, the insurance issues, the fact that she was here at all. Phil tried not to let it get to him, but today was different. He had spent hours by her side, watching her suffer, but now, she wouldn't even look at him.

Eventually, it became too much. "I'm just going to step out for a bit, Mom. I'll be back soon," Phil said quietly, not expecting a response.

Stepping outside into the cool evening air, Phil found himself standing in the hospital parking lot, taking deep breaths to steady himself. He felt exhausted, mentally and emotionally, and the weight of everything was pressing down on him.

As he leaned against the brick wall, trying to clear his head, Ethan's voice broke the silence. "Hey, Phil!"

Phil turned to see Ethan walking toward him, that easy smile still on his face. He felt a strange flutter in his chest as Ethan approached.
