Fiona
"Maze, she needs to hear exactly what happened that day," Drum tells Maze who looks horrified at the suggestion. I hate to say it, but I agree with Maze.
"No," he gasps. "I can't do that."
"She needs to hear it. It's been a week and she's calmed down a bit. It can't make anything worse." I know I need to trust him but I want to punch him a little. Little did either of us know, he was so incredibly wrong.
"Whatever, just tell me." I steel myself and when his tortured eyes find mine, I don't look away. Then I listen. I listen to him recount every detail of how he refused, so much so that he was gravely risking his own life. He tells me what happened up until he truly cannot remember. There's no lie or deception. There's only confusion from Maze and now me. When I look back to Drum, he has a knowing look telling me what I'm thinking is correct. If what I think happened is true, I might be worse than Maze. I might have destroyed something single handedly that wasn't broken like I thought it was. I might have added to the trauma that he had already endured.
"That can't be possible," I whisper to Drum, tears lining my eyes.
"Nothing else explains it," he replies solemnly.
"But who?" I ask, desperation lacing my tone.
"That's what I've been trying to find out. That's all I've done this last week." I nod and struggle to keep my tears in.
"Who what?" Maze asks, his head swinging between Drum and I.
"You said you had never met this new enforcer?" Drum asks Maze and he immediately shakes his head.
"No. King said he was new and I didn't recognize his voice. But I haven't seen King in almost seven years."
"Have you talked to Margie anymore?" I ask Drum and Maze looks confused and a bit overwhelmed.
"You've been talking with Margie?"
"No," I reply. "Drum won't let me."
"She's in the basement," Drum sighs and Maze chokes.
"Wait, what?"
"Are you worried about her?" My eyes narrow at him and his eyes widen.
"No, no, but I have questions, too. Like how she got me to do... that even though I didn't want to. I swear I didn't want to," he looks at me like he has been ever since that day. Desperate for me to understand. I run though everything that happened when I caught him, when I got home and I feel sick.
"Drum," I try to choke out but I can barely get out a breath. "How... I don't understand."
"You couldn't have known, Fi. None of us would have assumed that." I nod even though the first tear finally falls.
"Wait, what are you talking about?" Maze asks as he watches me cry. He looks concerned but cautious.
"The only way we're going to get through all of this to the point where life can get back to normal and King is out of the picture is if we're all honest. Maze, we need to know more about your history and anything you know about King. Fiona, you need to tell Maze everything. Because right now, the unknown is mentally destroying him." I nod again but Maze just looks more confused. I meant to tell Maze about what I am eventually. It's not that I didn't want him to know, I just wanted to be sure before I told him. The only person who's had to navigate this was Declan. Scarlet was amazing about it, but she had also been in a relationship longer and was pregnant with Duana. She's also Scarlet and is amazing.
