The classroom is alive with chatter when I enter. I watch as a paper bird flutters around me in a circle before darting away, and I can practically feel the magic pulsating from this place. All I can do for a moment is stand in awe, starry-eyed, taking it all in.
"Here, behind you! There is an open seat here!"
I turn my attention towards the sound of the voice, and I see a dark-skinned girl waving at me from her seat at one of the upper desks. I look behind me, checking if she's talking to someone else. But no, she's looking directly at me. After a moment of hesitation, I go up the stairs to join her.
"Thank you," I say as I take a seat next to her.
"No problem," she says. "My name is Natty. So, you are the new student."
I laugh. "That's me." I extend a hand to her. "My name is Isla."
"Hello, Isla." She shakes my hand with a smile. "Have you had a chance to look around the castle?"
"Yeah, actually. Professor McGonagall toured me around this morning, right before class," I explain.
"Ah, so you have met McGonagall already," Natty says. "She is one of my favourite teachers, but definitely someone to be reckoned with. I'd hate to get on her bad side."
"I've gathered as such," I say with a laugh.
"If I may ask," Natty says, her voice taking a curious turn. "Do you know what the reason for your delayed enrolment was? I have been wondering since I heard of you. I hope that is not a sensitive topic."
"Oh no, of course not," I reassure her. "It's kind of funny, actually. Apparently, there was mail trouble. An owl flying from the UK to the west coast of Canada—that's a far way to go. They had to figure out how to use...ah, what's the word...muggle mailing in order to get the letter to me. That's what I've been told, anyway."
Natty nods in understanding. "I see. So you came all the way from Canada?"
"Bingo."
"That is incredible. You are right, that is a far way to go--although, far enough to be delayed five years...I am not so sure," she ponders.
We chat for a while before class begins, and she tells me about the magic school she transferred from. Uagadou, a school of magic located in Uganda. It's supposedly the largest magic school in the world, and was built into the side of a mountain. I find myself fascinated, especially when she tells me about the wandless magic they use.
"You can do wandless magic? That's possible?"
She laughs. "Yes, it took me a while to learn how to use a wand when I first transferred here. Wandless magic is convenient, because you never need to worry about losing or breaking your tool to cast magic." Natty pauses, then smiles. "However, I have grown rather fond of using a wand. Much more dramatic."
I was barely able to wrap my head around the idea of one school of magic, let alone multiple all over the world. It has me wondering just how much there is to be discovered beyond these walls. But before I can think about it too hard, the smallest man I've ever seen steps up onto a stool at the front of the classroom. He clears his throat, then begins speaking in a squeaky voice.
"Good morning, class. I hope you've all had a very restful summer. My name is Professor Filius Flitwick, and I am pleased to be teaching you the art of Charms. Mr. Hayes, this is not your class. Please return to Potions."
The class laughs, and a student who must be in third year at the very most stands from his seat, wearing a proud smirk, and leaves, dabbing up a few people along the way.
