I run towards Sebastian when I spot him waiting at the same place where we parted ways. "Sebastian! Look at this!"
I stop before him, ignoring his bewildered look. I catch my breath as I take out my new wand and proudly present it to him.
"Damn," he says as he takes a closer look at it. "That is one bloody hell of a wand, Isla Andrysiak."
"I know! Isn't it so stunning?"
"It's very pretty," he agrees. "What's the type?"
"10 3/4 inches, rosewood, unicorn hair core, slightly yielding," I say, reciting what Mr. Ollivander told me, not having an idea what any of it means.
His lips cock into a grin. "A fitting choice. Did you get everything you needed?"
"Yep! What about you, did you get what you needed for your sister?" I ask.
"I did," he says. He claps his hands. "So, I guess the world is our oyster. Let's see what else we can get up to, shall we?"
All of a sudden, the very earth beneath our feet tremors violently. The first thought my West Coast brain comes up with is 'earthquake'. That's until I hear a low growl above. I watch in horror as a gigantic, armoured creature stomps through the town, wreaking havoc as it goes. The armour has a dark glow around it—the same as the dragon's collar. It has an ugly, pushed in face--like a pug gone wrong-- and a huge club that it's smashing everywhere, destroying shops and buildings left and right.
Sebastian curses under his breath. "Troll," he says, his eyes glued on the large thing.
"What the fuck, dude," I whisper, stuck in place—even as the troll tramps directly towards me.
Sebastian throws a spell at it, doing nearly nothing to harm it but startling it just long enough for him to push me out of the way. The troll quickly grows distracted when an officer casts a spell to its back, drawing its attention away from us.
"Draw it away from the village!" the officer cries as she and a small group of adult witches and wizards lure it away from the cluster of shops.
I can barely catch my breath, my heart is pounding hard in my chest as I stay stuck in place, unable to do much of anything. Turns out, 'catching a breath' isn't even in the cards for me at the moment, because the universe decides to have a second armoured troll smash through the barn directly behind us. And guess what? We're the only living targets in the area.
Delightful.
There isn't much else I can do except give my best attempt of defending myself, even though I can already feel myself teetering on the very edge of something I'm desperately trying to shove down. Sebastian and I both start rapidly firing spells at the troll, narrowly dodging its angry club.
"Are we weakening it at all?" I shout to Sebastian, after falling to the ground and rolling away from what almost was a lethal smash.
"Keep at it, we'll wear it out eventually!" he calls back, distracting the troll as I get back up. I gather my bearings as quickly as possible to take on some of the load, not wanting to leave him fending for himself for too long.
Finally, finally, the troll seems to falter slightly. I notice a wispy blue magic swirling around my wand--the ancient magic Professor Fig told me about. By now, I can identify it in an instant. I don't know what comes over me. One moment, it's a barely a whisper, and then it's suddenly a powerfully glowing sphere. It's hot, even burning, and I take no time to fling it at the troll. At the lightest graze of contact, the troll combusts into ashes.
The officer returns right at that moment, quickly approaching us. "Did you two just take on that troll on your own?"
I try to speak, but no words come out, none at all. Thankfully, Sebastian speaks up for me. "It's all a bit of a blur, Officer Singer."
