The bustling marketplace of Porthaven was a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and scents. The air brimmed with the mingling aromas of freshly baked bread, ripe fruits, and the salty tang of the sea breeze. Sharp, earthy notes of butchered meat and freshly caught fish added to the sensory mix, a constant reminder of the town's proximity to the ocean. Merchants shouted their wares from colorful stalls, while townsfolk haggled with an intensity suggesting each copper coin was a precious treasure. It was a place where nobility and commoners alike could be found—though the latter far outnumbered the former.
Eira Rowan moved deftly through the crowd, her basket clutched tightly in her hand. She was on a mission, as she often was, to gather ingredients for her grandmother's shop. The morning had started early, with a quiet walk through the forest at dawn to collect fresh herbs—comfrey, yarrow, thyme—before the market opened. Her grandmother was a healer, known throughout Porthaven for her remedies and potions, and Eira had been her apprentice from a young age. There was no room for frivolity in her life; every task had a purpose, and every moment was accounted for.
Carrots, leeks, garlic—her mind swirled with the herbs and roots on her list as she weaved through the market, her pace quickening. The sooner she finished, the sooner she could return to the cottage where a day's work still awaited her. She was efficient and determined to complete her errands swiftly, but today was different.
Just as she turned toward a stall selling vegetables, she collided with a tall, golden-haired figure who seemed to materialize out of nowhere. Her basket slipped from her grasp, scattering vegetables across the cobbled street.
"Watch where you're going!" Eira snapped, more out of surprise than anger. Her cheeks flushed as she bent down to gather the fallen produce.
The man she had bumped into—Ardain Pendragon, though she did not yet know his name—looked down at her with a raised eyebrow, clearly unaccustomed to being spoken to in such a manner. His fine clothes and easy stance marked him as noble, though there was something about him that seemed... out of place, like a prince playing at being a commoner. He was used to being admired, even fawned over, and the sharp tone from this young woman was unexpected.
"My apologies," Ardain said, his voice smooth, almost languid. "I should be more mindful. It wouldn't do to disturb the delicate order of your world, now would it?"
Eira's irritation flared, and she shot him a sharp glance. "Perhaps if you weren't so busy posing in the middle of the street like a lost noble, I wouldn't be picking up my vegetables."
Ardain's lips curled into a soft, almost wistful smile, his gaze drifting past her for a moment as if contemplating something distant. "Lost? Perhaps. But aren't we all, in our own ways?" His voice softened on the last word, letting the sentiment hang in the air. Then his attention snapped back to her, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Though, it seems I've found something worth my attention now."
Eira narrowed her eyes, determined not to be swayed by his charms. "If you're done philosophizing, maybe you could help me pick these up."
His smile widened as he crouched down beside her, movements graceful and unhurried. "Of course. It wouldn't do for me to leave you in disarray. That would hardly be becoming."
As he helped her gather the scattered vegetables, Eira couldn't help but glance at him from the corner of her eye. He moved with an effortless grace, each gesture controlled and precise, like someone too accustomed to being watched. Despite herself, she felt a flicker of curiosity—something about him was unsettling, like a puzzle she hadn't yet figured out.
"You're quite spirited for someone who just had their produce scattered across the pavement," Ardain remarked, his tone teasing but not unkind.
"And you're quite charming for someone with too much time on their hands," Eira retorted, brushing dirt off a leek and tossing it back into her basket. She tried to suppress the small smile threatening to tug at the corners of her mouth.
Ardain chuckled softly, the sound warm and genuine. "It's not every day I meet someone who isn't afraid to speak her mind. It's... refreshing."
Eira stood, basket in hand, and met his gaze squarely. "Well, don't get used to it. I've got better things to do than entertain a nobleman with nothing better to do."
For a moment, they stood there, locked in an unspoken standoff. His smile lingered, but there was something deeper in his eyes—something she couldn't quite place. Was he toying with her? Or was there more to his interest than just amusement?
Ardain inclined his head slightly, a gesture that felt oddly intimate despite the setting. "I'm sure you do," he said, his tone softening. "But perhaps our paths will cross again. Next time, I'll try not to be so... obstructive."
Before Eira could muster a response, Ardain turned and began to walk away, his dark cloak billowing behind him as if he were stepping out of a storybook. Eira watched him go, her heart inexplicably racing. There was something about him—a mixture of charm and mystery that unsettled her, like an itch she couldn't scratch.
She gave herself a mental shake. He was just a nobleman with too much time on his hands. She had far more important things to worry about than a pretty-faced noble who spoke in riddles.
Yet, despite herself, she found her thoughts wandering back to him as she hurried home. His words, his tone, the way he had looked at her—none of it made sense. And that annoyed her more than anything.
Eira's thoughts scattered like the vegetables from her basket earlier. "Forget him," she muttered under her breath, clutching her basket a little tighter. Ardain Pendragon, or whoever he was, would soon be a distant memory, swallowed up by the demands of the day.
Or so she told herself.
