the slow buzzing of the ceiling fan was the only audible thing in the room, ‘cept for the whispers of fingers turning pages of books. sunoo sat on the window ledge of his bedroom, a book on his lap and eyes scanning the pages animatedly. sunghoon was not that far away, with his back against the leg of the bed and hands sporting a book of his own. they were waiting for their friends to arrive at their supposed ‘study’ session, but they were each running late. so instead of lounging around the living room, the two decided to enjoy each other’s company for a while (at least before their friends arrived and their eardrums burst from the shrieking).

“do you think, if it was possible, that fiction could become reality?”

that was sudden. everything with sunoo was always sudden.

“what?” sunghoon peers at him from his side, closing the novella he held in his hands. “i mean, when you read books and what not– the kind that gets your brain churning or your heart pumping wildly in your chest,” sunoo pauses for a moment to twist his body so he was fully facing sunghoon, “do you ever wish it was real?”

this was sunoo. so infallibly sunoo. sunghoon’s noticed a pattern of some sort though: he never really asked questions like these unless he was entirely comfortable with someone. sunoo never spoke about whatever was on his mind, choosing to keep his thoughts to himself. he says it’s like exposing the most fragile parts of himself, free for the world to inspect.

there were many things to describe one kim sunoo. talented, pretty, gentle – it was a never-ending list. but weak? that’s what sunoo isn’t. in sunghoon’s eyes, sunoo was one of the strongest people he knew. he always seemed fragile, what with – for the lack of a better term, shitty immune system, sunoo was never weak. yet there were times like this, wherein the 17-year-old boy lets his guards down; he lets his vulnerability peek through the extroverted confidence that sunoo projected. and like this, sunghoon thinks that sunoo looks beautiful.  so when he just blurts out whatever he’s thinking – no matter if it’s 3 am in the morning, sunghoon’s always there listening intently.

the younger boy was still deep in thought, bottom lip protruding slightly. the window ledge that he sat on was directly hit by the golden, setting sun. the side of sunoo’s face was highlighted in an enchanting glow of oranges and pinks, and sunghoon finds that his eyes have moved on their own accord, trailing down the slope of sunoo’s nose, and–

stop. park sunghoon, know your boundaries.

“like, when you read fantasy novels, wouldn’t there be times when you wished that it happened in real life? remember that time you read harry potter when you were seven, and was convinced that the second you hit 11, you’d receive a letter too?” a cocky, yet serene smile was tugging at the corners of sunoo’s lips. sunghoon groans, hiding his face behind his book. “i thought we swore to never talk about that!”

“aw c’mon hyung! how could i forget when my dear, dear, sunghoon-hyung was absolutely heart-stricken at the lack of owls banging angrily on his window just to accept his overly anticipated hogwarts letter?” sunghoon watches as sunoo’s face morph into a pair of puppy dog eyes, jutting out his bottom lip for added effect. sunoo may be kind and gentle, but contrary to popular belief, he was devil personified. the younger boy watches as sunghoon’s face grows aghast with shock; he never expected sunoo (or anyone for that matter) to remember that phase of his life. “i thought we swore to bury that memory away?” sunoo only rolls his eyes playfully in reply. the younger boy sighs, smiling slightly. “but don’t you ever wonder what it would be like if life was like a romance novel?” he laughed, sounding exuberant in sunghoon’s ears. “everything seems to fall in place perfectly in a romance story; but how can you be so sure that that would happen? how do they still manage to fall for each other over and over again?” suddenly sunghoon isn’t sure if sunoo’s even talking about the same thing anymore.
