Carl's POV

A clicking noise rings through my ears. Once, twice, three times. Each time seems like it's getting louder. A mumble follows with thrashing.

I slowly open my eyes at the realization of what the mysterious noise is.

"She's up." My hands slowly reach up to my groggily face and give it a rub. It never seems like we get enough sleep. Always something waking us up or spooking us. Something that won't let us get back to sleep.

"Hey!" Her voice shrieked through the halls, it bounced off the walls and echoed as it drifted away. "Where am I? Somebody help me!" Loud banging followed as she beat on the walls next to her.

I sighed as I sat up from the small bed. The springs popped as my weight shifted from one spot to another.

The small mirror in the corner of the room caught my attention. My reflection stared back at me as I look at what I have become in the past few years.

My boots tapped lightly as I slowly walk to the object. Each step I take, I find it harder and harder to believe that I had changed so much.

My dark hair fell just above my eyes in the front, and trailing to the back it fell longer, about to my shoulders. My face held dirt and grime in its creases. But there was one thing that caught my attention.

My eyes.

They had changed the most. The once vibrant blue that sparkled in the sun was now a pale light blue. They were drained of everything. Hope, care, happiness. Love.

Her scream echoed through my ears once more. I rolled my eyes and stomped my way to the door, jerking it open and storming up the room that held the girl back.

I twisted the knob and shoved the door open. The knob made contact with the wall behind it and made a loud thumping noise.

She jumped at my appearance and turned to face me with wide eyes.

"Why the hell are you screaming?" I raise my voice, but then remember the others sleeping and try to calm myself.

"Where am I?" Her voice trembles. Her back is pushed up against the head board as she backs away from me.

I smirk as I slowly close the door to eliminate the sound from escaping.

"A place." My smart ass answer comes rolling out of my mouth. She rolls her eyes at me as she gets comfortable.

"Well why am I here?" She changes her question. I think for a moment about it. I'm not really sure why she's here. Dad just told us to take her along and we took her. He didn't really give us a valid excuse.

"Rick wants you to be a part of our group. If you can pull your weight that is." I leave my answer short.

"Pull my own weight?" Her brows come together as confusion sinks on her face. I sigh in frustration and walk closer to the bed. She shrinks back as I get closer.

I stop in my place. I shouldn't feel sorry for the girl, but in a way I do. I grab a chair from the corner of the room and sit in the place I was once standing.

"Yes. Pulling your own weight. Meaning you don't need someone to take care of you." I explain. "How can you contribute to us?" I ask.

She gulps as she looks around the small room avoiding any contact from me as possible.

"I, uh, I'm pretty good at cooking. My mom-" she stops as she mentions her mother. A look of pure pain fills her eyes as she stares out the mucky window on the other side of the room. She quickly shakes her head and begins again. "I'm a pretty good shot. My father taught me before he left."

I stare at her for a moment, taking in her completion. Her blonde hair fell to her stomach in loose curls, what wasn't curls was replaced by tangles. Her eyes were a striking green. They seemed to shine as the light came into the room. They were the exact opposite of mine.

They were full of life. Hope. She seemed almost happy with herself and with her choices in life. Her eyes held hope. They held love.

And I envied her.
