The Plot/Summary

[name] is a young girl who decided to spend her summer in Qingce village with her two aunts, Yuelang and Yiangguang. In the dusty old room she stayed in temporarily was a vintage yellow telephone stuck at the top of a high cabinet.

During her stay in Qingce, it happens to be so that her best friend, Xiao, and his father Zhongli, is spending the summer back in Liyue province as well. They meet when Zhongli, who is an avid collector of vintage items, visits their home to purchase when Xiao also decides to come.

For an unknown reason, [name] strongly believes that the telephone is of great meaning. She hopes that it will ring someday. Zhongli has put an eye on the telephone and is keen on buying it, but [name] objects. Zhongli allows [name] and hopes for any update. [name] is guilty of her actions.

Xiao and [name] spend the day together. Her aunt requests her to buy items from the convenience store, to which [name] obliges. On her visit to the store, she meets old friends, Xingqiu and Chongyun, and catches up. However, back in their home, Xiao witnesses the telephone ring.

By the time [name] gets back, Xiao reveals everything to her. Unfortunately, he and Zhongli had to leave and travel to Liyue harbor for business, leaving [name] on her own. That same day, the telephone rang again. [name] immediately answers, only to find out that on the other end of the line was a stuck-up boy, whose name was Scaramouche, apparently looking for his sister, Raiden.

In conversation, Scaramouche recognizes [name]'s name as a loner girl in school. [name] does not recognize any Scaramouche, nor is she a loner at school, nor was she currently in school. Afterward, [name] updates Xiao on the recent phone call.

The next day, Scaramouche looks for [name] in school, getting an unwanted, harsh response from her. Walking in the hallways to his next class, he sees a boy waving to him, who turns out to be Xiao.

Xiao, in turn, in the middle of the streets, encounters Scaramouche frozen in place. Xiao reports this to [name] after she had gotten an angry call from Scaramouche.

It turned out to be that the telephone broke the barrier between universes. Scaramouche was from a different world from [name]. Every single day, they both spoke. [name]'s sweetness started to rub off on Scaramouche, catching himself being awfully too nice to people around him, arousing suspicion from others. As time went by, Zhongli asked for no update from [name] as if he seemed to have forgotten. Xiao had been spending less time with [name] after she started speaking with Scaramouche on the telephone daily.

They spoke every single day until the summer ended. [name] was not at all worried as she knew she could only request to have the telephone, even if it meant of her expense. That was until on the last day of her stay in her aunt's house, had it been Zhongli who visited once more and demanded to have the telephone, with a larger cost to give. Having [name] not owned the telephone, her aunts favorably sold it to Zhongli, leaving [name] resentful. She tells Xiao to attempt to convince Zhongli to sell it to him, but to no avail. [name] was left in despair that she could no longer talk to the boy on the other side of the phone she'd taken a liking to. She had never heard from Xiao again, who had probably burned bridges with her.

Going back to her shared condominium in Inazuma near her school, she meets that same boy she longed to meet in person. It had never occured to her on what he looked like, but she felt as if that was him. She attempted to start a conversation, which went surprisingly well. He was extremely nice and a likable person — much contrasting to the Scaramouche she knew.

Befriending the Scaramouche from her world, she realizes that he is gravely ill. A few months or more, he passes away.

A year passes by, and she moves on by dating a cunning man, Shikanoin Heizou, who turned out to have been cheating on her. Leaving her in utter misery, if it couldn't have been any worse, the same man that caused her sadness had come back in her life. In one depressing Friday night, [name] receives a visitor knocking on her door at quarter to twelve. Zhongli, looking worn out and lethargic, barging into her dark space without even a breath and plops down the couch.

He explains everything to her, the entire year of longing. Zhongli knew the powers of that telephone not long after [name] refused it to be sold, which was why he took it without any further notice, wanting her to have at least spent the summer good. With several mutters of apologies and a confused [name], Zhongli, with full guilt laced in his words, says that the telephone was of no use of him. He shared the story he had with a woman named Guizhong and realized that there was no way of getting her back, not even through a telephone that breaks universal barriers. Xiao later told him about [name]'s experience with the man named Scaramouche, to which Zhongli had figured out a way to connect his soul to this universe. Zhongli mentioned the way Xiao was so willing to offer his own when Zhongli found out that the exchange was a soul for a soul. Zhongli was, of course, as Xiao's own father, very opposed to the idea. Despite the immense amount of incessant convincing and insisting he had given Zhongli, it was no use.

Later it was when Xiao had learned how the exchange worked. He, in a way, found the number Scaramouche input to call [name] and opened the wiring that was glowing blue. In an enchantment, the gods answered his call and exchanged his soul for Scaramouche's.

Like it could get any worse, [name] felt almost near depressed. Finding out that her own best friend, who she thought was his own wish to cut ties with her, sacrificed his own life for her sake without notice. Zhongli shared the same sadness, although without resentment, seeing that it was the girl his son loved.

Zhongli tells [name] that he finds out through a written letter under Xiao's pillow. He informs [name] that there is no certainty that the Scaramouche she knew will be near here, and if there was an existing Scaramouche in this universe, means that he might have took a different form.

The story ends with the epilogue in Chen, [name]'s cat's perspective, retelling the story, showing love to his owner, later remembering his past life after his exposure to that telephone.

Aaaaand..... that ends there. Thanks, people! This was the plot I made last year. A little obvious, and a little too much inspired by a certain fanfiction that also had something to do with a telephone, that shall not be named......

Goodbye:)
