Carlisle tried to convince me to go to highschool. I refused. Every other Cullen graduated years ago, I'm not going to be stuck there alone. Now that I'm not a danger to humans, everybody has gone back to their own lives; Edward and Bella went back to their college in Alaska, Rosalie and Emmett are on their thousandth honeymoon, and Alice is with Jasper and Renesme backpacking in the Alps. It's boring here alone. Which is the only reason I agreed to enroll in college. Carlisle doesn't want me straying too far from home for now, so he told me to find a community one in a nearby town. I'm not sure why he didn't just tell me to enroll in the one that's thirty minutes away from our house - that would've made so much more sense. Anyway, now I'm driving to Fork's Reservation Community College. I wonder what it'll be like to be back in school after so long.
A sign that's pointing to the college directs me down a bumpy side road until I reach a rusty gate. The intercom, that I didn't expect to work, beeps into life and projects a woman's voice.
"State your business here."
"Uh, I came to enroll. I'm a new student."
"This is the staff entrance miss."
"I'm sorry, I don't know my way around here yet."
"I'll let you in, but don't come this way again."
"I promise I won't." The intercom let's out a loud buzz and the gate finally creaks open, allowing me into the parking lot which is essentially a grassless patch in the middle of a large field. The school in front of me looks more like a large log cabin, although it's rather picturesque against the trees and mountains that line the background. Once I make it to the building, I push open the large doors and walk up to the reception which is also made of wood. I'm about to speak to the lady when someone to my left interrupts me.
"What are you doing here?" It's Jacob.
"I- I'm enrolling, am I not-"
"Your kind aren't allowed on this side of Forks, didn't Carlisle tell you that?" Ouch.
"No, he doesn't know I'm here. But this is the closest college to my house and, frankly, it's the easiest to get into. I don't really have the best educational background so-"
"I don't care, you need to be gone by next semester, got it?" I was about to retort what he said but he walked away before I even opened my mouth. What an asshole.
"Miss?" the reception lady asked absent-mindedly, "name, date of birth and class please."
"Right. Lorelei Bacay, August 15th 1992, human biology."
"Bacay, the transfer from England?"
"That's me."
"1992, that would make you 20?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Cool, that's my age too," I whip around to see Seth smiling at me.
"Seth, oh my God you scared me."
"Sorry, I just didn't expect to see you here. Not that it's a bad thing that you're here." I chuckle.
"I know what you mean Seth, don't worry." The reception lady hands me a slip and asks Seth to take me to the photography room to get my ID photo taken.
"Smile."I go back to the reception lady and hand in the slip and photo. She quickly prints my timetable and hands me my student ID card. This photo isn't too bad actually. It's been so long since I've had my photo taken that I forgot how to pose, but it still looks okay.
"It's a good photo," Seth says whilst grinning over my shoulder.
"Thanks. This says I'm in room 152?"
"It's just down this way and to the left, I'll take you."
"Thank you for actually being nice to me, despite," I lower my voice, "what I am.
"It's no problem, I like to think that vampires and werewolves are more alike than we realise. We shouldn't be enemies. Besides, it's not hard to treat people with human decency."
"It is for some people apparently," I scoff, remembering my encounter with Jacob earlier.
"I warn you now, this college was built by our Quileute ancestors for us werewolves, nobody else really enrolls here so we're the only students."
"Wait, so you're telling me that I essentially enrolled myself in a private werewolf school?"
"Pretty much," Seth chuckles. I let out a frustrated sigh before turning to face Seth.
"This is room 152."
"Thank you so much Seth." I give him a hug of gratitude and open the door to the classroom, walking in hurriedly. I quite like giving and receiving hugs now.The classroom is very bare of decorations and practically desolate of students. A tall, white-haired man with a potruding nose and even more potruding stomach is stood in front of a blackboard at the front of the classroom.
"Ah, you must be the new student. Miss Bacay, is it?"
"Yes, sir."
"Perfect. Well, you will find that I only have one other student," he giggles idly, "so you can sit next to Mr Black." That's when I turn to see none other than Jacob Black scowling at me over his desk.
"My name is Mr Martin." I gulp as I make my way cautiously to the desk beside Jacob, his eyes following me as I do so.
"I thought I told you to leave," he whispers spitefully.
"You gave me until next semester, actually," I return his aggression in my tone. He looks at me startled for a split second before stilling his expression and returning his attention to the lesson at hand. The lesson goes by peacefully, other than the occasional glares from Jacob, and I leave with a better understanding of the reflex arc.As I walk down the hallway, I notice more eyes staring at me with a similar distate that Jacob showed me during lesson. I'm about to speed up my pace when I feel a presence at my side.
"Hey, how was your first lesson?" Seth asks whilst grinning from ear to ear.
"Informative. Jacob didn't seem to enjoy my company though."
"Don't worry about him, he swore to Bella that he would keep you out of harms way."
"I'd say his stare is doing a significant amount of damage to my mental health actually." Seth laughs childishly, and I can't help but laugh along with the infectious sound. I spend lunch at the nearby grill with Seth, and he invites me to go to the beach with him which I reluctantly decline for my own safety - going to a pack hangout as the only vampire doesn't sound like a good idea after all. Instead I head straight home and end up falling asleep almost instantly due to exhaustion.
