I stood from my seat, the subtle scrape of my chair against the marble floor echoing through the grand banquet hall. The moment I rose, all conversation ceased. The music, the laughter, the clinking of crystal goblets—everything fell into an expectant hush.
I looked out at the sea of faces—nobles, warriors, diplomats, siblings, friends—and felt a strange mix of nerves and strength settle in my chest.
"Welcome, all," I began, my voice clear, steady, carrying to every corner of the vast hall, "to our new home."
Silence wrapped around the room like velvet, thick with anticipation.
"I am proud to stand before all of you tonight—not only as your High Queen—but as a Darken." I paused, letting the name settle on the air like a weight.
"I will be honest with you," I continued, "there was once a time when being a Darken brought me nothing but suffering. We all know what my father was like."
A few heads bowed. A murmur stirred at the mention of him. My hands clenched at my sides briefly, then relaxed.
"However," I said, a new strength rising in my voice, "over time I learned something invaluable. One man's cruelty should never define an entire bloodline. A single shadow cannot erase a legacy built since the days of the original Great Dragon—one of justice, unity, and balance. That name, Darken, once struck fear into the hearts of innocents. But I intend to restore it to what it once was—and what it can be again."
I raised my chin.
"I will right my father's wrongs. Not with more bloodshed, but with compassion. With truth. With unity."
A few guests nodded, some smiled. I felt James's gaze on me, a steadying warmth in the crowd.
"You may notice," I said, shifting slightly to gesture behind me, "there is a table left free. One traditionally reserved for the extended royal family."
I stepped down the dais and walked toward it, the hem of my celestial gown trailing like starlight over the floor.
"There are members of the royal family I wish to formally introduce to you tonight," I said, standing tall in front of the table. "Members whose names you may know—though not in truth. Members who have walked a difficult path, but stand here today as full and equal Darkens. From this moment forward, they are to be treated as such, in every sense of the word."
I turned to the doors and raised my hand.
"Open them."
The great doors groaned as they swung open once more.
"It is with the deepest honor that I introduce my brothers and sisters."
"Valenor Darken," I called.
Valenor strode forward, tall and composed, yellow hair falling over one shoulder. He paused before me, bowed deeply, and took his seat at the royal table.
"Sebastian Darken."
Sebastian followed, his expression solemn but proud, his steps slow and purposeful. He bowed in the same manner as his brother and joined him at the table.
"Seraphina and Calista Darken."
The twin girls entered, their gowns catching the candlelight like fire and frost. Calista offered a radiant smile as they bowed together.
"Your speech was the truth," she whispered as they passed me.
I returned her smile with a nod, my heart tight with emotion.
"Cassiopia Darken."
Cassiopia walked in with quiet grace, her long golden hair woven with small crystal flowers. She bowed respectfully and sat.
