The days leading up to Friday seemed to fly by. Ethan and Sophia continued their study sessions, and each time, Ethan found himself growing more confident. He even started catching glimpses of Sophia in the hallways, and she would always greet him with a smile, which was more than he could have ever hoped for just weeks ago.

But on Wednesday, everything changed.

Ethan was heading to his locker when he noticed a group of students gathered near the entrance of the school, murmuring excitedly about something. Curiosity got the better of him, and he made his way over to see what was going on.

As he pushed through the crowd, his heart sank. There, on the wall, was a massive poster with a picture of Logan and Sophia—side by side, smiling at the camera. Above the picture, bold letters spelled out the words: "Homecoming King and Queen?"

Ethan felt like the wind had been knocked out of him. Of course, Logan would want Sophia as his date to the dance. And judging by the excited chatter, everyone else seemed to think it was a foregone conclusion.

Ethan turned away from the poster, feeling a wave of despair wash over him. He had just started to believe that he might have a chance with Sophia, but now... how could he possibly compete with this?

As he made his way to his next class, his thoughts were a jumbled mess. Should he still go on that coffee date with Sophia? Would she even want to, now that Logan was making a move? Ethan felt torn—part of him wanted to back off and let things play out, but another part of him, the part that had grown braver in the last few days, wanted to fight for his chance with her.

But before he could make up his mind, the decision was made for him.

After school, Ethan was walking to his car when he heard someone call his name. He turned to see Sophia hurrying towards him, a worried expression on her face.

"Ethan, wait up!" she called, catching her breath as she reached him.

"Hey, Sophia," Ethan said, trying to keep his voice steady.

"I'm so sorry about that poster," Sophia blurted out. "I didn't know Logan was going to do that. It's so embarrassing..."

Ethan's heart lifted slightly. "So, you're not going to the dance with him?"

Sophia shook her head. "No way. I mean, I haven't decided if I'm going to the dance at all yet, but if I do, it won't be with Logan."

Ethan felt a surge of relief. Maybe all hope wasn't lost after all.

"So, Friday?" Sophia asked, her tone hopeful.

"Friday," Ethan confirmed, a smile spreading across his face.

As he drove home, Ethan felt like he was on top of the world. He might not have been the obvious choice, but for now, that didn't matter. He had a date with Sophia, and that was all that mattered. But in the back of his mind, he knew Logan wouldn't give up so easily.

The real challenge was still ahead.
