Sam took a deep breath as he turned the key, staring at the door. "Finally..." he whispered, taking the key out. He shoved them into his pocket before reaching for the door handle. "We're free," he finished, pushing the door open.
Abigail sat inside, her hands cuffed together. She slowly turned around, looking up at Sam in the doorway. The teen smiled as he pulled the keys out, swinging them around. Abigail's eyes widened as she realized what was going on. "What the hell? How did you get the keys? How are you out?" she asked quietly, laughing as she got up. She immediately approached Sam, placing her shaking hands on one of his shoulders.
Sam chuckled, "I took my chance. The guard came in, turned his back to me, and I... oh."
It finally kicked in. Sam killed someone. That was a first. It was something he never thought of doing. However, since he's been dragged into the mess of Dream, which then became George's, he knew that if it ever called for it, he would have to. Only if it was the only way. "I killed him," he whispered.
Abigail sighed, "Sam, honey, it's okay. You did it in self-defense! Nobody is going to find out. When the police realize the truth, they'll have no reason to arrest you."
Sam nodded. He came back to his senses as he looked down at the keys. "Right, let's go--" he said, grabbing Abigail's wrists. He quickly unlocked the cuffs, throwing them toward the bed. He took a deep breath as he took Abi's arm, guiding her out of the room. "Do you think the exit is far from here?" Sam asked.
The woman shrugged, "I assume so. Do you know if there are any cameras around here? We can't get caught out of the rooms."
The teen looked up at the walls and corners, looking for cameras. "Seems like there aren't any yet. We should try to find Sapnap's room and take him out," he says. "I fear the longer he's in there, the harder it'll be to bring him back. I've already seen how bad it's gotten when those soldiers brought me here."
Abigail nodded, "I could barely recognize my sweet boy when I arrived. What could they have done to him?"
Sam shrugged, "Torture?"
It was true. When Sapnap was moved to this facility, he was immediately thrown into the white room. They made sure his cuffs kept his wrists close together. Stanely ensured there were no windows, hard walls, hard floors, or anything that Sapnap could use to harm himself or use against the guards. Oh, the pain the teen went through.
After the first few days, Sapnap got the bright idea to slam the small cable connecting the cuffs against the metal bed in hopes it would break. Since the room isn't soundproof, the guards patrolling the area took notice of the loud noise and informed Stanely on the spot. The General had gotten to the white room in a matter of minutes, holding a bat and a taser in his hands. The man still remembers the look of sheer horror on Sap's face.
The screams, the cries, the begging. It was horrible. Stanely himself almost gave up and set the boy free. That's how bad it was. Once, Sapnap was badly beaten and tortured and he couldn't push himself up from the ground. He lay in his pool of blood. His arms aching, and one of his knees was broken, it was torture during those weeks. Since then, Stanely had eased down with the punishments, but still, here and there, he'd give the boy a good beat down if Dream or George acted up. However, most of the time, it was for mere fun on Stanely's part.
There was no question as to why Sapnap flinched at any sort of sound, or when he had a look of fear when the guards or Stanely would walk in, or when he'd talk to himself or see things in the corner of the white room. He was fucked up to the core. Sam's assumption is right. If Sapnap stays in that room any longer, he might go full-blown insane. God knows what he might do.
Sam and Abigail run down the hall, taking sharp turns around the corner. Abigail gasped as she turned, peering over her shoulder, and finding a group of guards running around the corner, spotting them. "Sam! They found us!" she said.
The teen hurriedly ran down the hall, moving to the sides now and then to avoid any speeding bullets. "Come on, we have to find Sapnap's room!" Sam said, pulling Abigail along. The woman looked ahead, tears pricking her eyes. "Wait," she said, lifting her free hand. She pointed ahead to a purely white door. "That's it! That's where Sapnap is!"
BANG!
Sam and Abigail duck, watching as the bullet hits the door. They could hear Sapnap yell in fear. Luckily enough, the boy was on the bed, far away from where the bullet landed. "No, we can't!" Abigail said, grabbing Sam who stopped mid hallway. The teen turned to her, eyes wide. "We can't get him..." she said. Her voice cracked as tears ran down her face. She grabbed Sam's hand as she began to run.
It hurt, though. It hurt her deeply to leave her son in that room. But she had no choice. She could care less if she died, but she couldn't let Sam die when they were so close to escaping. Sam gasped as he shook his head, being pulled around the corner. "We have to go back!"
"We can't!" Abigail said, "We would die if we did."
Sam fell silent. He knew it was true. But the thought of not saving his friend was worse than being locked up in a room for weeks or months. Eventually, an exit sign was up ahead. Abigail pushed the door, grabbing Sam's arm tightly. "Oh my god," she said, staring at the elevator before them. A sign in the room read "back exit."
She turned to Sam, "We can get out from here without nobody seeing us."
The teen nodded, quickly hitting the button on the elevator. The doors opened. They got inside, staring at the numerous buttons to choose from. "Oh!" Sam exclaimed, hitting the button that read "G." He looked at Abigail, a small smile on his face. Abigail let out a heavy sigh as she quietly laughed through the tears. "We're out!" she sighed.
Sam sat down, feeling his head pound. Abigail let her head hang as the elevator began to move up. It didn't take long for them to reach the surface. The elevator doors opened. For the first time in a while, they saw grass, the sky, and the burning sun. Sam groaned as he put his hand above his face. Abigail ignored it as she stepped out, pulling the teen with her.
She sighed as she reached behind her, grabbing her phone out of her pocket. She had been hiding it from the guards. However, at this point, she only had a few minutes with it before its battery ran out. "I don't have enough signal to call Jackson... but I think I can still find a way back home," she said.
Sam nodded as he walked, pushing his way through the long grass. He turns around staring at the building. "Abigail," he calls out. She sighs as she stops, turning to him. "Yeah?"
"We're at the Scientific Laboratory..." he said. "They were keeping us hidden underneath the main floor. The scientists must be people that work with Stanely."
Abigail let out a heavy breath, "I swear, that man has too many connections. We shouldn't be too far from home, then. Let me see which direction we have to take."
Sam nods, grabbing Abigail's arm to guide her through the forest in front of them. As she busied herself with finding a path, Sam continued to walk and ensured nobody was following them. Now and then, he'd turn to the Lab, thinking about how Sapnap was being kept inside. "Found it! We continue heading straight down this direction, we should make it back into civilization this way in thirty minutes!"
"Great! Let's go," he said. "The quicker we walk, the quicker we'll get there."
Abigail stopped as she hugged Sam tightly. The teen stared up at the sky in confusion, hugging the woman back. "I can't believe we're out," she sighed. "I can't believe we know where he is... we can tell the police!"
Sam smiled as he pulled away, "We're getting closer to leaving this mess, but we have to get home first. Let's go."
Abigail and Sam set out, walking down the path. They would stop now and then to take breaks. But slowly, they drew closer to home.
To Be Continued. :)
