A two story house, on the edge of the beach can be seen as the sun sets.
A brunette girl- around the age of 30- walks down the beach while holding a young blonde boys hand.
"Vivian, when can we see mom and dad again? It's been over a year." The thirteen year old little brother of Vivian asks as they walk down the beach.
"Soon, Kevin. Soon. You know they had to go away on business." Vivian says, ruffing her little brothers hair.
"I just miss them." Kevin says with a sigh.
"I miss them too. I'm sorry they have been gone this long. I know I'm not easy to live with." Vivian says, being serious for once.
Vivian has always been a person to use humor or jokes to cover up the way she actually felt. She did it a lot in high-school. She only ever felt truly happy when she was around one person and he left during their senior year and she hasn't seen him since.
"I wouldn't want to live with anyone else, Viv!" Kevin says, stopping and hugging his older sister. "You have kept me safe, fed me, and made sure I got an education. You raised me while mom and dad were busy. You are like a second mom but cooler because you are my sister."
"Oh, Kev." Vivian says, tears clouding her vision as she hugs him back tightly. "I love you."
"I love you more." Kevin responds with a laugh.
Vivian pulls back from him and pulls him further down the expanse of the beach, towards their house. Which is where she knows a surprise is waiting for Kevin.
Their parents had texted her saying they were on their way so she took him out for the day so they could get settled in and showered.
Once they make it to the house, Vivian opens the door and ushers Kevin inside.
He freezes in the doorway before shooting off like a rocket towards his parents.
Vivian missed them too, don't get her wrong, but she was more used to them being constantly away than he was.
"Mom! Dad!" He screams as he tackles their mom in a hug.
She laughs as she hugs him back. Their dad leans down to the two on the floor and hugs them.
Vivian smiles at them and looks over at the kitchen.
Her mother cooked.
Her smile slowly fades as she thinks about all the missed family meals and the fact that before Kevin was born, when they got back from a trip they barely said 'hi' to her.
It made her miss her old friend even more. They used to do dinner every Wednesday and Thursday because his father was busy and his mom worked late grading papers on those days.
"Viv! You trickster!" Kevin yells, tackling her in a hug now.
She let's out a startled sound as she is quite literally tackled out of her thoughts of her friends bright blue eyes.
"Are you suprised?" She asks, her face lighting up at his excitement.
"Yeah! Thank you so much!" Kevin exclaims before running back over to their parents.
Vivian hated to be that person, but looking at her brother and parents being happy made her long for the time when they weren't here.
She could at least pretend they cared about her when they weren't around.
It made her remember one particular moment with her old friend.
~
Vivian stood at the edge of the sand, water lapping at her toes as she stared out into the horizon.
