SCHOOL / PASSION ASSIGNMENT

We watched "Rat Ode" by Elizabeth Acevedo in class today and were told to make our own ode about something we feel is underappreciated. Due to my passion, I chose an orca, and this is what I wrote.

Because you are not a reflection of our fears,

Because you are not an image constrained by our biases,

Instead, you glide through the dark depths, a creature of untamed grace

Yet we distort your essence with our narrow view.

We see your power and mistake it for violence,

A savage mirror of our own inner turmoil,

Not recognizing that your strength is not brutality

But a testament to life unfiltered, untamed.

In your dark, sleek bodies, there is a story of survival,

A dance with the wild that eludes our understanding,

We are blinded by our fears, unable to see the beauty

In your freedom, in the raw pulse of the ocean's heart.

Your songs pierce the silence, a profound echo

Of a world we are too quick to judge, too slow to cherish,

We focus on the shadow of aggression

And miss the light of your existence, pure and untamed.

You are a force of nature, a wild, sacred, truth,

Beyond our projections and misconceptions,

In your presence, there is a lesson of harmony and strength

A reminder of the wild beauty we too often ignore.
