Behind Zara Gainsbourg's Silent Promo Strategy for The 45 Guardsmen
Zara Gainsbourg has never been one to follow convention. The granddaughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, she's built her own legacy through acting, activism, and, most recently, music. But even for someone known to stir the media pot, Zara's approach to promoting her latest album, A Lesson In Romantics, has raised more than a few eyebrows.
On June 19, Zara surprise-dropped her debut album under the musical moniker The 45 Guardsmen, marking her first full-length musical release since her 5-track self-titled EP in 2019. What followed was... well, not much. There was no press tour, no interviews, and only one music video for the single "In The Kitchen" before she seemingly vanished from the public eye again.
The timing couldn't have been more curious. Zara's highly anticipated release came only days before her first public reunion with ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift at Pride Live's Stonewall Day event on June 30, their first face-to-face since their 2021 breakup. Fans and media alike eagerly anticipated any fallout, with speculation running wild after Zara was spotted leaving a private afterparty early looking visibly dishevelled. The rumor mill spun, but Zara? She gave them nothing. Except for a few paparazzi shots of her leaving Abbey Road Studios in London over the past month, Zara once again pulled off a Houdini act—disappearing from the media spotlight.
This "silent" approach feels deliberate. Zara and her team have made it clear that she won't engage with questions about Taylor or their tumultuous past relationship. Not in 2021 when they split, not during the album's release, and certainly not now. She and her team have refused interview requests or comments, including for this article.
Her resurfacing yesterday—via a tweet from Spotify announcing a Spotify Singles release, featuring a piano and voice version of the track "Movie" from A Lesson In Romantics and a cover of Noah Kahan's "Strawberry Wine"—has rekindled interest. The release, reportedly recorded in New York City, marks Zara's first real engagement with her album's promotion.
Yet, despite her radio silence, the album is a hit. A Lesson In Romantics has skyrocketed up the charts, currently sitting at #3 on the U.S. album charts, with 12 of its 14 songs on the Billboard Hot 100. The question on everyone's mind: How did Zara pull off this level of success with virtually no promo?
