chapter 6: i like you

"Morning Rei" Kakashi says watching the kunoichi stir awake.

"Morning" Rei says letting out a yawn. "So what do you do anyway?"

"What do you mean?"

"How do you spend a typical day? Walk me through it."

"Well, I spend most of time on missions. Any time I'm not on a mission I'm usually at home or reading."

"That's it? You don't see your friends?"

"I try not to get close to people."

"I guess I'm not the only one living a sheltered life" Rei says.

"I guess not..."

Rei couldn't help but wonder, if Kakashi didn't get close to people...why was he getting so close with her and so quickly? 

"Anyway, what are we doing today?"

"I can show you around the village a bit if you like. I know you haven't been outside the Uchiha compound much."

"Yeah, that sounds really great let's do that."

Kakashi took Rei into the village and helped her get some new clothes using money her earned from his missions. Since Rei wasn't officially a ninja and spent most of her time locked in the Uchiha compound, she didn't have a dollar to her name. The Uchiha clan was cursed with the burden of emotions beyond their control. Once her parents over-protective instincts awakened over her, they were unremovable.

Rei only learned how to utilize her sharingan because Itachi and Shusui would teach her in secret. She activated the sharingan when she was very young. At age seven. The day her parents decided to keep her under lock and key they literally threw here into a closet and kept her there for a few days without food or water. They claimed it was to keep her safe after injuring herself while out with Genma, but she wasn't so sure. 

Her mangekyo activated not long after when she endured another punishment. Without Shisui and Itachi, she would be unable to put to use her abilities. They even taught her how to wield a susanoo. Aside from that, she had no basic ninjutsu or taijutsu training. She was as knowledgeable as a genin in those aspects and was inexperienced in battle. Rei felt bad since Itachi and Shisui were constantly abandoning Sasuke to train her when her parents were out. But, it was there choice...so she couldn't beat herself up that badly over it. 

Rei smiled as Kakashi picked her out another outfit. 

"You're gonna need at least 7 if you're gonna be staying with me."

"You have weirdly good taste in clothes."

"Thank you?" Kakashi says. 

After clothes shopping, Kakashi took Rei to a J-BBQ restaurant. Kakashi and Rei sat at their table and immediately caught the attention of a nearby group.

"Kakashi!" Might Guy shouts waving aggressively at the pairing.

"Guy" Kakashi says giving a meek wave in return. 

"Are those your friends?" Rei asks eyeballing the ninja in the green jumpsuit sat next to a man smoking a cigarette and a woman with bright red eyes. 

"Not really" Kakashi says. "Classmates, I guess. The one in green over there has a sort of rivalry with me."

"Rivalry? How-" Before Rei can finish her thought, they are interrupted by the man in green approaching the table. 

"Who's this Kakashi?" Guy asks.

"This is Rei Uchiha. Rei, this is Might Guy."

"Nice to meet you" Guy replies with a big smile. "I haven't seen you around much Kakashi I think were due to compete. I am winning you know."

"Yeah, by two big deal."

"Well, when you're ready to prove yourself you know where to find me. Later Kakashi."

Guy waves and returns to his table. 

"Well he seems nice" Rei says. 

"He really is" Kakashi sighs. "He's a really good guy. Even though I've shut him out all this time, he's never left me alone."

After they finish their meal, Kakashi pays and brings Rei to a nearby park. They both sit on the swings and sway peacefully enjoying each other's company.

"Well, thank you for dinner the food was great."

"Of course" Kakashi replies. "I'm glad you liked it."

"Rei?!" A voice shouts from a distance.

Rei squints and makes out the outline of a figure approaching them. His chakra felt warm and familiar. 

As the man approaches, Rei notices the senbon hanging from his mouth. 

"Genma?!!" 

"So, you still recognize me? I'm flattered" Genma says. 

Rei hadn't seen Genma since she was a young child but they used to be such close friends. Itachi informed her that Genma would ask how she was doing whenever he ran into him. 

"What are you doing out of the compound?"

"Long story" Rei says. "But, the important thing is..I'm out. For good."

"Really?"

"Yes" Rei admits, although partially to herself for the first time. "I'm living outside of the compound now."

"Oh yeah? Whereabouts?"

"I'm actually staying with Kakashi until I find a more permanent residence."

"Oh really? That's only a five minute walk from my place. Hey Kakashi..if you ever want your place back, feel free to send her my way anytime" Genma says with a slight smirk. 

"I don't think that'll be happening anytime soon" Kakashi says biting down on his lower lip. "But thanks for the offer" he forces a smile.

Rei stares confused at the boys interaction. There was a weird tension but she couldn't quite place it. However, she wasn't well versed in social cues so she didn't know what to make of it. 

"Anyway, I was heading to the village gates since I have another mission" Genma says twirling the senbon in his finger before placing it back between his lips. "Catch up soon?"

"Definitely" Rei smiles. Genma opens his arms for a hug and Rei awkwardly falls into his embrace. It felt good, but not as good as when Kakashi held her. 

"Bye, Genma."

"Later, Rei."

"How did he know you were here?" Kakashi groans as soon as Genma is out of earshot. 

"Maybe he saw us at the restaurant?"

"Who knows" Kakashi shrugs. "Either way, I don't like that guy."

"Do you like anyone?"

"I like you" Kakashi says without hesitation.

"I like you too" Rei admits. "More than I probably should."

"Let's go home?"

"Yeah" Rei says. 

Kakashi stands from his swing and offers Rei his hand. She takes it and it and he walks her home.  And everything somehow feels okay.
