Looking through the bus window, she could see the silhouette of shops and people passing by on the road. In between her glances, she managed to catch sight of a particular person standing near the door. Averting her eyes, she clutched her chest with her palm as a sudden rush of heartbeat and curiosity towards the covered face made her feel excited. Until she reached her destination, she managed to steal a few more glances and each time her heart raced even faster.
In the rush of life and under academic pressure, the growing anxiety in her life had been often neglected. Over time, it slowly led to depression. After a long battle with it and a hiatus from studies for two long years, she recently joined a bachelor's degree. With problems and issues multiplying, she used to avoid every kind of distraction she used to believe in, such as relationships.
She used to take a different bus each day, based on whichever arrived when she reached the bus stop. Then, one day, she got on a bus that arrived perfectly in time to get her to college. And on that certain bus, she saw him for the first time. He was a guy who worked on the route that the bus took. What made him stand out was that he always had his face covered with a mask and always wore a cap.
In a matter of minutes, she finally reached her destination and got off the bus. Intrusive thoughts about him occupied her mind, but later on, as she attended classes and engaged in the usual chit-chat with her friends, her mind drifted away from those thoughts. It was a long day for her, as she had been cooped up in her home for 2 long years, feeling isolated from the social world. Catching up has made her feel a bit awkward and shy at times, and she has fewer friends, except for a guy she met during a library member's meetup shortly after their college's brief introduction for freshmen a week ago. She wanted to feel new and fresh, but the loneliness and frustration of being away from same-age peers were getting to her, making her feel disturbed at times too.
As the classes ended, evening arrived earlier than expected. She left college and headed to the nearest bus stop. Looking around, she saw the usual sights: people waiting for the bus, others getting off, children of all ages, and the bustling noises of the city. Beggars and street vendors were scattered along the way.
When the bus headed toward her home arrived, she got on without realizing it, and that turned out to be a huge mistake.
It was a limited-stop bus, which meant it only made a few stops, and one of those stops was her destination. However, thinking it was a regular bus, she paid for the ticket and, after finding a seat, accidentally fell asleep. Unbeknownst to her, someone was watching everything from a distance.
That certain someone was wearing a black face mask and a cap over his head. His piercing eyes were focused on her as if she was about to disappear. He watched her swaying back and forth due to the speed of the bus, then got up and sat near her. Her deep slumber came to a halt as she suddenly realized that she might have missed her stop. She got up, looked around, and saw that no one was sitting with her.
Glancing around she came to know that the stop she was supposed to get off had been passed. So she immediately panicked and requested the driver to let her off at the nearest station.
By the kind gesture of the driver she managed to get off at a stop nearly 3 km away from her usual one.
Contemplating how to return she stood on the pavement thinking . Suddenly someone came near her asking if she needed help.
A guy who is in his late 20s , wearing a crumpled dirty brown shirt and slightly short torn blue pants , chewing on tobacco , seemingly a creep.
She stumbled backwards being startled. Holding tight on the straps of the bag she turned towards the nearest coffee shop and got in.
Still shivering from the dangerous encounter 10 mins ago. She took out her phone and dialled her father's number .
He had called her multiple times due to her being later than usual. Being reassured that her father is on the way, she ordered a cup of coffee and began looking out of the shop window , observing the slight rain starting to pour out.
Minutes passed by, a black silhouette was staring right at her standing opposite the shop near an alley...
The sense of being watched gripped her conscience. She scanned her surroundings and outside, but found no one as she had anticipated. Without realizing it, she continued sipping her coffee until her father arrived to pick her up. Despite the hustle and bustle around her, she failed to notice a silhouette watching her from the corner of the shop.
She got up and left the place with her father, while a certain person's stare lingered over her figure.
When she got home, she freshened up and started working on her assignments, but she kept spacing out. Eventually, she reached into her bag and pulled out the source of her distraction: an heirloom with a locket attached to a silver chain.

Previously, when she found it, she sneaked to the library to get a proper look at it. From that moment onwards, it was stuck in her mind. Despite everything that happened that evening, it slipped from her mind.
it was supposed to be a history (minor) project for extra credits from her not-so-polite HOD. but everything went south when her crazy friend stole it for close examination. Her friend asked her to keep it with her for the day because she was afraid of getting caught.
Glancing at it, she lost track of time because her sister barged into her room, shouting about how many times she had called her for dinner.
She left to have dinner with her parents after being frustrated by her sister's childish behavior. During dinner, they talked about how she ended up at the coffee shop and playfully teased her about it, but the dinner still went well.
Her home was supposedly an old-fashioned Indian house with grilled windows. It was a traditional neighborhood with houses spaced apart, each featuring expansive lawns and trees. She stared at the darkness from her study table near the window, holding the heirloom firmly.
There was a distant noise of the neighborhood dog barking continuously for no reason. She tossed around on her bed, unable to sleep, with the night lamp vividly illuminating her room.
After a brief moment, she began dozing off. The night started to become awfully quiet, and the barking of the dog came to a silent halt. The leaves of the trees remained still, as if the whole atmosphere had become eerily dark and then the night lamp went out.
The pendant placed on the study table started to emit a mesmerizing golden glow.
The room had been enveloped in darkness, as if the night had forcibly invaded the space. When a sudden source of light pierced through the darkness, it seemed to illuminate everything even more brightly.
At that moment, a looming shadow began to approach inside the room. It grew larger until it resembled the person who had been following her all morning and evening near the alley.
